The Judgment on Damascus and Ephraim
Isaiah's message concerning Damascus: the city will become a fallen ruin, and the cities of Aroer will be abandoned. The kingdom shall cease from Damascus, and the fortress shall vanish from Ephraim. Jacob's glory will fade, leaving only a small remnant—like gleaning after the harvest or a few olives left on the tree after shaking.
Jesaja 17,1-6
1An oracle concerning Damascus: Look, Damascus will cease to be a city; it will become a heap of ruins.
מַשָּׂ֖א דַּמָּ֑שֶׂק הִנֵּ֤ה דַמֶּ֙שֶׂק֙ מוּסָ֣ר מֵעִ֔יר וְהָיְתָ֖ה מְעִ֥י מַפָּלָֽה׃
2The cities of Aroer are abandoned. They will be left to the flocks, which will lie down there with no one to frighten them.
עֲזֻב֖וֹת עָרֵ֣י עֲרֹעֵ֑ר לַעֲדָרִ֣ים תִּֽהְיֶ֔ינָה וְרָבְצ֖וּ וְאֵ֥ין מַחֲרִֽיד׃
3The fortress will vanish from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus. What is left of Aram will fare like the glory of the Israelites, declares the LORD of hosts.
וְנִשְׁבַּ֤ת מִבְצָר֙ מֵֽאֶפְרַ֔יִם וּמַמְלָכָ֥ה מִדַּמֶּ֖שֶׂק וּשְׁאָ֣ר אֲרָ֑ם כִּכְב֤וֹד בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ יִֽהְי֔וּ נְאֻ֖ם יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃ ס
4On that day the glory of Jacob will fade, and the fat of his body will waste away.
וְהָיָה֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא יִדַּ֖ל כְּב֣וֹד יַעֲקֹ֑ב וּמִשְׁמַ֥ן בְּשָׂר֖וֹ יֵרָזֶֽה׃
5It will be as when a reaper gathers the standing grain and his arm harvests the ears; it will be as when someone gleans ears of grain in the Valley of Rephaim.
וְהָיָ֗ה כֶּֽאֱסֹף֙ קָצִ֣יר קָמָ֔ה וּזְרֹע֖וֹ שִׁבֳּלִ֣ים יִקְצ֑וֹר וְהָיָ֛ה כִּמְלַקֵּ֥ט שִׁבֳּלִ֖ים בְּעֵ֥מֶק רְפָאִֽים׃
6Yet gleanings will be left in it, as when an olive tree is beaten: two or three olives at the very top, four or five on the fruitful branches, declares the LORD, the God of Israel.
וְנִשְׁאַר־בּ֤וֹ עֽוֹלֵלֹת֙ כְּנֹ֣קֶף זַ֔יִת שְׁנַ֧יִם שְׁלֹשָׁ֛ה גַּרְגְּרִ֖ים בְּרֹ֣אשׁ אָמִ֑יר אַרְבָּעָ֣ה חֲמִשָּׁ֗ה בִּסְעִפֶ֙יהָ֙ פֹּֽרִיָּ֔ה נְאֻם־יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ ס
