An oracle concerning Damascus: Look, Damascus will cease to be a city; it will become a heap of ruins.
The cities of Aroer are abandoned. They will be left to the flocks, which will lie down there with no one to frighten them.
The fortress will vanish from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus. What is left of Aram will fare like the glory of the Israelites, declares the LORD of hosts.
On that day the glory of Jacob will fade, and the fat of his body will waste away.
It will be as when a reaper gathers the standing grain and his arm harvests the ears; it will be as when someone gleans ears of grain in the Valley of Rephaim.
Yet gleanings will be left in it, as when an olive tree is beaten: two or three olives at the very top, four or five on the fruitful branches, declares the LORD, the God of Israel.
On that day people will look to their Maker, and their eyes will turn to the Holy One of Israel.
They will no longer look to the altars, the work of their own hands, nor gaze at what their fingers have made, the Asherah poles and the incense altars.
On that day their fortified cities will be like the abandoned places of the thicket and the topmost bough, left empty before the Israelites; and all will be desolation.
For you have forgotten the God of your salvation; you have not remembered the Rock, your refuge. That is why you plant your lovely gardens and set out cuttings from a foreign vine.
The day you plant them, you make them grow; the morning you sow, you bring them into bloom — but the harvest vanishes on the day of sickness and incurable pain.
Ah, the din of many peoples — they rage like the raging of the seas! The uproar of nations — they roar like the roar of mighty waters!
The nations roar like the roar of great waters, but he rebukes them, and they flee far away, driven like chaff on the mountains before the wind, like whirling dust before a gale.
At evening, sudden terror! Before morning, they are gone. This is the portion of those who plunder us, the lot of those who rob us.
