Darius I

King of Persia who rebuilt the temple

Die RückkehrKingLeaderc. 550–486 BC

Darius I (Darius the Great) was the Persian king who reigned from about 522 to 486 BC. He played a crucial role in biblical history by confirming Cyrus's original decree regarding the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem and ordering that work should continue after a period of stoppage. During his reign, the second temple was completed in 516 BC.

Temple construction halts and the matter is brought before Darius

Opponents of the Jews tried to stop the rebuilding of the temple. The case was sent to King Darius for a decision.

24So the work on the house of God in Jerusalem came to a halt, and it stood still until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
5But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, and they were not stopped until a report could go to Darius and an answer be sent back concerning it.
6This is a copy of the letter that Tattenai, the governor of the province Beyond the River, and Shethar-bozenai and his associates, the officials of the province Beyond the River, sent to King Darius.
7They sent him a report, and this is what was written in it: To King Darius, all peace.

8Let it be known to the king that we went to the province of Judah, to the house of the great God. It is being built with massive stones, and timber is being set into the walls. The work is being done with diligence and is prospering in their hands.

Darius confirms Cyrus's decree

Darius ordered a search in the royal archives and found Cyrus's original decree allowing the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem.

1Then King Darius issued an order, and a search was made in the archives where the treasures were stored in Babylon.
2And at Ecbatana, in the fortress in the province of Media, a scroll was found, and this is what was written in it:
3"In the first year of King Cyrus, King Cyrus issued this order concerning the house of God in Jerusalem: Let the house be rebuilt as a place for offering sacrifices, and let its foundations be laid. Its height shall be sixty cubits and its width sixty cubits,
4with three courses of dressed stone and one course of timber. The cost is to be paid from the royal treasury.

5Moreover, the gold and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took from the temple in Jerusalem and carried to Babylon, are to be returned. They shall be brought back to their place in the temple in Jerusalem and deposited in the house of God."

Darius orders that the temple construction shall continue

Darius issued a new decree ordering that work on the temple should continue without hindrance, and that costs should be covered by the royal treasury.

6Now then, Tattenai, governor of the province Beyond the River, Shethar-bozenai, and their associates, the officials of Beyond the River: keep far away from there.
7Leave the work on this house of God alone. Let the governor of the Jews and the elders of the Jews rebuild this house of God on its site.
8I also issue this decree concerning what you are to do for these elders of the Jews in the building of this house of God: the cost is to be paid in full to these men from the royal treasury, out of the tribute of Beyond the River, so that the work is not halted.
9Whatever is needed—young bulls, rams, and lambs for burnt offerings to the God of heaven, along with wheat, salt, wine, and oil—is to be given to them daily without fail, according to the word of the priests in Jerusalem,
10so that they may offer pleasing sacrifices to the God of heaven and pray for the life of the king and his sons.
11I further decree that if anyone alters this order, a beam shall be pulled from his house, and he shall be impaled on it, and his house shall be made a ruin because of this.
12And may the God who has caused his name to dwell there overthrow any king or people who lifts a hand to alter this or to destroy this house of God in Jerusalem. I, Darius, have issued this decree; let it be carried out with all diligence.

The temple is completed during Darius's reign

The second temple was completed in the sixth year of Darius's reign, to great joy for the Jewish people who had returned from exile.

13Then Tattenai, governor of the province Beyond the River, Shethar-bozenai, and their associates carried out with all diligence exactly what King Darius had sent word to do.
14So the elders of the Jews went on building and prospering through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah son of Iddo. They finished the building according to the command of the God of Israel and the decree of Cyrus, Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia.
15This house was completed on the third day of the month of Adar, in the sixth year of the reign of King Darius.

The prophets Haggai and Zechariah prophesy during Darius

The prophets Haggai and Zechariah encouraged the people to resume temple construction in the second year of Darius's reign, with God's promises of blessing.

1In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest:
2This is what the LORD of hosts says: This people say, "The time has not come, the time for the house of the LORD to be built."
3Then the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai:
4Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?
1In the eighth month of the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berechiah, son of Iddo:
7On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berechiah, son of Iddo:

Haggai brings God's promise of glory in the new temple

During Darius's reign, Haggai prophesied that the new temple would surpass the former one in glory, and that God would bless his people.

1On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai:
2Speak now to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people. Say to them:
3Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? And how does it look to you now? Does it not seem like nothing in your eyes?
4Yet be strong now, Zerubbabel, declares the LORD. Be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD, and get to work, for I am with you, declares the LORD of hosts.
6For this is what the LORD of hosts says: Once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land.
7I will shake all the nations, and the treasures of all the nations will come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of hosts.
8The silver is mine and the gold is mine, declares the LORD of hosts.
9The glory of this latter house will be greater than the former, says the LORD of hosts. And in this place I will grant peace, declares the LORD of hosts.
