Dedan

Descendants of Cush and Abraham

Die PatriarchenPatriarchc. 2000–1800 BC

Dedan is a name that appears several times in the Bible, both as a grandson of Cush through Raamah (Gen 10:7) and as a grandson of Abraham through Keturah and her son Jokshan (Gen 25:3). Dedan became the ancestor of an Arab people and trading nation who lived in the northwestern part of the Arabian Peninsula. The prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel mention Dedan in connection with trade and prophecies about judgment.

Dedan as a descendant of Cush

In the genealogy of Noah's descendants, Dedan is mentioned as a son of Rama, who was a son of Cush. This links Dedan to the Hamitic peoples.

7The sons of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan.

Dedan as a descendant of Abraham

Dedan is also mentioned as a son of Jokshan, who was a son of Abraham and his other wife Keturah. His sons were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim.

3Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan, and the sons of Dedan were the Asshurim, the Letushim, and the Leummim.

Isaiah's prophecy about Dedan

The prophet Isaiah mentions Dedan in a prophecy concerning Arabia, where caravans from Dedan must seek refuge in the forest due to coming destruction.

13An oracle concerning Arabia: In the thickets of Arabia you must camp for the night, you caravans of Dedan.
14Bring water to the thirsty, you who live in the land of Tema; meet the fugitive with bread.

Jeremiah prophesies judgment over Dedan

Jeremiah includes Dedan among the nations that will drink from the cup of the Lord's wrath and warns the people of Dedan to flee.

23Dedan, Tema, Buz and all who clip the hair at their temples;
8Flee, turn back, hide deep down, you inhabitants of Dedan! For I am bringing disaster upon Esau, the time of his reckoning.

Ezekiel mentions Dedan's trade activities

In Ezekiel's lament over Tyre, Dedan is described as a significant trading partner who dealt in saddle blankets and other goods.

15The men of Dedan traded with you; many coastlands were your customers. They paid you with ivory tusks and ebony.
20Dedan traded with you in saddle blankets.
13therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: I will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off from it both man and beast. I will make it a wasteland; from Teman to Dedan they will fall by the sword.

Ezekiel's prophecy about Gog and Dedan

In the prophecy concerning Gog from the land of Magog, Sheba and Dedan are mentioned among those who question Gog's invasion of Israel.

13Sheba and Dedan, the merchants of Tarshish and all its leaders will say to you, "Have you come to seize spoil? Have you gathered your horde to carry off plunder, to make off with silver and gold, to take livestock and goods, to seize great spoil?"
