Concerning the Ammonites, this is what the LORD says: Has Israel no sons? Has he no heir? Why then has Milcom taken possession of Gad, and his people settled in its cities?[^1] [^1]: The Hebrew word can also be read "their king"; Milcom was the chief god of the Ammonites.
Therefore the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will sound the battle cry against Rabbah of the Ammonites. It will become a desolate mound, and its villages will be burned with fire. Then Israel will dispossess those who dispossessed him, says the LORD.
Wail, Heshbon, for Ai is destroyed! Cry out, daughters of Rabbah! Put on sackcloth and mourn; run back and forth among the walls, for Milcom will go into exile, together with his priests and officials.
Why do you boast of your valleys, so rich and well watered, you faithless daughter, trusting in your treasures and saying, "Who will come against me?"
I am bringing terror upon you from all your neighbors, declares the Lord GOD of hosts. You will be driven out, each one straight ahead, with no one to gather the fugitives.
Yet afterward I will restore the fortunes of the Ammonites, declares the LORD.
Concerning Edom, this is what the LORD of hosts says: Is there no longer wisdom in Teman? Counsel has perished from the prudent; their wisdom has decayed.
Flee, turn back, hide deep down, you inhabitants of Dedan! For I am bringing disaster upon Esau, the time of his reckoning.
If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave a few gleanings? If thieves came by night, would they not take only their fill?
But I have stripped Esau bare; I have uncovered his hiding places, and he cannot conceal himself. His offspring is destroyed, his brothers and his neighbors—and he is no more.
Leave your orphans; I will keep them alive. Let your widows trust in me.
For this is what the LORD says: If even those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, will you go unpunished? You will not go unpunished; you will surely drink.
For I have sworn by myself, declares the LORD, that Bozrah will become a horror, a disgrace, a ruin, and a curse, and all her cities will be everlasting ruins.
I have heard a message from the LORD: an envoy has been sent among the nations, saying, "Gather together and march against her! Rise up for battle!"
For I will make you small among the nations, despised among men.
The terror you inspire and the pride of your heart have deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rock, who hold the heights of the hill. Though you build your nest as high as the eagle's, from there I will bring you down, declares the LORD.
Edom will become a horror; all who pass by will be appalled and will hiss at all her wounds.
As Sodom and Gomorrah were overthrown, along with their neighbors, says the LORD, so no one will live there, no human being will settle in it.
Look, like a lion coming up from the thickets of the Jordan to a lush pasture, so I will suddenly chase Edom from her land. And who is the chosen one I will appoint over her? For who is like me? Who can summon me? And what shepherd can stand before me?
Therefore hear the plan the LORD has made against Edom, and what he has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: The little ones of the flock will surely be dragged away; their own pasture will be appalled at them.
At the sound of their fall the earth will quake; their cry will be heard as far as the Red Sea.
Look, like an eagle he will rise and soar and spread his wings over Bozrah. On that day the hearts of Edom's warriors will be like the heart of a woman in labor.
Concerning Damascus: Hamath and Arpad are put to shame, for they have heard bad news. They melt away in fear; there is anguish like a restless sea that cannot be calmed.
Damascus has grown weak; she has turned to flee, and panic has seized her. Anguish and pain have gripped her like a woman in labor.
How can the city of praise be forsaken, the town that was my joy?
Therefore her young men will fall in her streets, and all her soldiers will be silenced on that day, declares the LORD of hosts.
I will set fire to the walls of Damascus, and the flames will consume the fortresses of Ben-hadad.
Concerning Kedar and the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated, this is what the LORD says: Rise up, march against Kedar and destroy the people of the east!
Their tents and their flocks will be taken, their tent curtains and all their goods, and their camels carried off. Men will shout to them, "Terror on every side!"
Flee, run far away! Hide deep down, you inhabitants of Hazor, declares the LORD, for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has formed a plan against you; he has devised a scheme against you.
Rise up, march against a nation at ease, that lives in confidence, declares the LORD—a nation with no gates and no bars, dwelling alone.
Their camels will become plunder, and their vast herds spoil. I will scatter to every wind those who clip the corners of their hair, and I will bring disaster upon them from every side, declares the LORD.
Hazor will become a haunt of jackals, a wasteland forever. No one will live there, no human being will settle in it.
This is the word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam, at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah:
This is what the LORD of hosts says: I am about to break the bow of Elam, the mainstay of their might.
I will bring against Elam the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and I will scatter them to all these winds; there will not be a nation where Elam's exiles do not go.
I will terrify Elam before their enemies, before those who seek their life. I will bring disaster upon them, even the heat of my anger, declares the LORD. I will send the sword after them until I have made an end of them.
I will set my throne in Elam and wipe out from there king and officials, declares the LORD.
Yet in days to come I will restore the fortunes of Elam, declares the LORD.
