Hazarmaveth was a son of Joktan and a grandson of Eber, who was a descendant of Shem, Noah's son. He is regarded as the ancestor of a people and a region in southern Arabia, known today as Hadramaut in Yemen. He is mentioned in the genealogies in Genesis and 1 Chronicles as part of the table of nations after the flood.

The Dispersion of the Nations

After the Tower of Babel, the descendants of Joktan, including the people of Hasarmavet, spread to southern Arabia and established their territories there.

30Their settlements stretched from Mesha toward Sephar, the hill country of the east.
וֽ͏ַיְהִ֥י מוֹשָׁבָ֖ם מִמֵּשָׁ֑א בֹּאֲכָ֥ה סְפָ֖רָה הַ֥ר הַקֶּֽדֶם׃ ‬
31These are the sons of Shem, by their clans and languages, in their lands and nations.
אֵ֣לֶּה בְנֵי־שֵׁ֔ם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם לִלְשֹׁנֹתָ֑ם בְּאַרְצֹתָ֖ם לְגוֹיֵהֶֽם׃ ‬
32These are the clans of Noah's sons, according to their family lines, within their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earth after the flood.
