Shem (Noah's son)

Ancestor of the Semites

Die PatriarchenPatriarchc. 2400–1800 BC

Shem was Noah's eldest son and survived the flood with his family in the ark. He was blessed by his father Noah and became the ancestor of the Semitic peoples, including the Israelites through Abraham's lineage. According to the Bible, Shem lived for 600 years and served as an important link between the pre-flood and post-flood worlds.

Survived the flood

Shem entered the ark with his father Noah, his brothers, and their wives, surviving the great flood that wiped out the rest of humanity.

7Noah went into the ark, and with him his sons, his wife, and his sons' wives, to escape the waters of the flood.
13On that very day Noah entered the ark, together with Shem, Ham, and Japheth, Noah's sons, and Noah's wife and the three wives of his sons.

Exited the Ark

After the waters receded, Shem left the ark with his family to repopulate the earth.

15Then God said to Noah,
16"Come out of the ark, you and your wife, your sons and your sons' wives with you.
18So Noah came out, together with his sons, his wife, and his sons' wives.

Covered His Father's Nakedness

When Noah lay drunk and naked in his tent, Shem and Japheth took a robe, walked backward into the tent to cover their father without looking at his nakedness.

23So Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it across their shoulders, and walked in backward to cover their father's nakedness. Their faces were turned away, so that they did not see their father's nakedness.
26He also said, "Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem! May Canaan be his slave.
27May God extend Japheth's territory, and may he dwell in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be his slave."

Received Noah's Blessing

As a reward for his respectful act, Noah blessed the God of Shem and prophesied that Canaan would be his servant.

26He also said, "Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem! May Canaan be his slave.

Ancestor of Many Nations

Shem became the father of Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram, and through them the ancestor of the Semitic peoples of the Middle East.

21Sons were also born to Shem, the older brother of Japheth; he was the father of all the sons of Eber.

31These are the sons of Shem, by their clans and languages, in their lands and nations.
