13 On that very day Noah entered the ark, together with Shem, Ham, and Japheth, Noah's sons, and Noah's wife and the three wives of his sons. hebr בְּעֶ֨צֶם הַיּ֤וֹם הַזֶּה֙ בָּ֣א נֹ֔חַ וְשֵׁם־וְחָ֥ם וָיֶ֖פֶת בְּנֵי־נֹ֑חַ וְאֵ֣שֶׁת נֹ֗חַ וּשְׁלֹ֧שֶׁת נְשֵֽׁי־בָנָ֛יו אִתָּ֖ם אֶל־הַתֵּבָֽה׃
After the waters receded, Shem left the ark with his family to repopulate the earth.
15 Then God said to Noah, hebr וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶל־נֹ֥חַ לֵאמֹֽר׃
16 "Come out of the ark, you and your wife, your sons and your sons' wives with you. hebr צֵ֖א מִן־הַתֵּבָ֑ה אַתָּ֕ה וְאִשְׁתְּךָ֛ וּבָנֶ֥יךָ וּנְשֵֽׁי־בָנֶ֖יךָ אִתָּֽךְ׃
18 So Noah came out, together with his sons, his wife, and his sons' wives. hebr וַיֵּ֖צֵא־נֹ֑חַ וּבָנָ֛יו וְאִשְׁתּ֥וֹ וּנְשֵֽׁי־בָנָ֖יו אִתּֽוֹ׃
When Noah lay drunk and naked in his tent, Shem and Japheth took a robe, walked backward into the tent to cover their father without looking at his nakedness.
23 So Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it across their shoulders, and walked in backward to cover their father's nakedness. Their faces were turned away, so that they did not see their father's nakedness. hebr וַיִּקַּח֩ שֵׁ֨ם וָיֶ֜פֶת אֶת־הַשִּׂמְלָ֗ה וַיָּשִׂ֙ימוּ֙ עַל־שְׁכֶ֣ם שְׁנֵיהֶ֔ם וַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙ אֲחֹ֣רַנִּ֔ית וַיְכַסּ֕וּ אֵ֖ת עֶרְוַ֣ת אֲבִיהֶ֑ם וּפְנֵיהֶם֙ אֲחֹ֣רַנִּ֔ית וְעֶרְוַ֥ת אֲבִיהֶ֖ם לֹ֥א רָאֽוּ׃
26 He also said, "Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem! May Canaan be his slave. hebr וַיֹּ֕אמֶר בָּר֥וּךְ יְהֹוָ֖ה אֱלֹ֣הֵי שֵׁ֑ם וִיהִ֥י כְנַ֖עַן עֶ֥בֶד לָֽמוֹ׃
27 May God extend Japheth's territory, and may he dwell in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be his slave." hebr יַ֤פְתְּ אֱלֹהִים֙ לְיֶ֔פֶת וְיִשְׁכֹּ֖ן בְּאָֽהֳלֵי־שֵׁ֑ם וִיהִ֥י כְנַ֖עַן עֶ֥בֶד לָֽמוֹ׃
As a reward for his respectful act, Noah blessed the God of Shem and prophesied that Canaan would be his servant.
26 He also said, "Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem! May Canaan be his slave. hebr וַיֹּ֕אמֶר בָּר֥וּךְ יְהֹוָ֖ה אֱלֹ֣הֵי שֵׁ֑ם וִיהִ֥י כְנַ֖עַן עֶ֥בֶד לָֽמוֹ׃
Shem became the father of Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram, and through them the ancestor of the Semitic peoples of the Middle East.
21 Sons were also born to Shem, the older brother of Japheth; he was the father of all the sons of Eber. hebr וּלְשֵׁ֥ם יֻלַּ֖ד גַּם־ה֑וּא אֲבִי֙ כָּל־בְּנֵי־עֵ֔בֶר אֲחִ֖י יֶ֥פֶת הַגָּדֽוֹל׃
22 The sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram. hebr בְּנֵ֥י שֵׁ֖ם עֵילָ֣ם וְאַשּׁ֑וּר וְאַרְפַּכְשַׁ֖ד וְל֥וּד וֽ͏ַאֲרָֽם׃
31 These are the sons of Shem, by their clans and languages, in their lands and nations. hebr אֵ֣לֶּה בְנֵי־שֵׁ֔ם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם לִלְשֹׁנֹתָ֑ם בְּאַרְצֹתָ֖ם לְגוֹיֵהֶֽם׃
Shem is included in Jesus' genealogy as recorded by Luke, showing the line from Adam through Shem to Jesus.
