Abraham's son by Keturah

Medan was one of the six sons Abraham had with his second wife, Keturah, after Sarah's death. He is regarded as the ancestor of an Arab tribe, and his descendants were sent eastward with gifts, away from Isaac who was the heir to the covenant promises.

Birth and lineage

Midian was born as the son of Abraham and Keturah. He is mentioned in the genealogy of Abraham's sons with Keturah.

Sent Eastward

Abraham gave gifts to the sons he had by his concubines and sent them eastward, away from his son Isaac, while he was still living.

6But to the sons of his concubines Abraham gave gifts, and while he was still alive he sent them away from his son Isaac, eastward to the land of the east.
וְלִבְנֵ֤י הַפִּֽילַגְשִׁים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְאַבְרָהָ֔ם נָתַ֥ן אַבְרָהָ֖ם מַתָּנֹ֑ת וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֵ֞ם מֵעַ֨ל יִצְחָ֤ק בּנוֹ֙ בְּעוֹדֶ֣נּוּ חַ֔י קֵ֖דְמָה אֶל־אֶ֥רֶץ קֶֽדֶם׃ ‬

32Keturah, Abraham's concubine, bore Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. The sons of Jokshan: Sheba and Dedan.
