Nebat

Jeroboam's father

Das geteilte KönigreichPatriarchc. 980–940 BC

Nebat is best known as the father of Jeroboam, the first king of Israel after the kingdom was divided. He is mentioned repeatedly in the Bible as an identifier for his son, who is referred to as "Jeroboam, son of Nebat." Nebat himself played no direct role in the biblical accounts, but his name is inseparably linked to Jeroboam's sin and rebellion against Rehoboam.

Mentioned as Jeroboam's father

Nebat is identified as the father of Jeroboam, the servant of Solomon who rose up against the king.

26Jeroboam son of Nebat also rebelled against the king. He was an Ephraimite from Zeredah, and his mother was a widow named Zeruah; he was one of Solomon's officials.

Jeroboam's rebellion against Solomon

Jeroboam, son of Nebat, lifted his hand against King Solomon. Nebat is mentioned here as an identifier for his son.

26Jeroboam son of Nebat also rebelled against the king. He was an Ephraimite from Zeredah, and his mother was a widow named Zeruah; he was one of Solomon's officials.
27This is how he came to rebel against the king: Solomon had built the Millo and closed the breach in the wall of the city of David his father.
28Now Jeroboam was a capable man, and when Solomon saw how well the young man did his work, he put him in charge of all the forced labor of the house of Joseph.

Jeroboam becomes king over Israel

After Solomon's death and the division of the kingdom, Jeroboam, son of Nebat, became king over the ten northern tribes of Israel.

2Now Jeroboam son of Nebat heard of it while he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon; and Jeroboam stayed on in Egypt.
3So they sent for him and called him, and Jeroboam and the whole assembly of Israel came and said to Rehoboam:
15So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events came from the LORD, to fulfill the word the LORD had spoken through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.
20When all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent for him and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. No one followed the house of David except the tribe of Judah alone.

Jeroboam's sin attributed to the son of Nebat

The expression "Jeroboam son of Nebat, who made Israel sin" becomes a recurring formula throughout the Books of Kings as a reference to idol worship.

1In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam son of Nebat, Abijam became king over Judah.
2He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Maacah daughter of Abishalom.
26He followed the whole way of Jeroboam son of Nebat and his sin, which he had led Israel to commit, provoking the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger with their worthless idols.
31As if it were a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, he took as his wife Jezebel, daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and he went and served Baal and worshiped him.

Nebat's origin from Ephraim

Nebat is described as an Ephrathite from Zeredah, placing him in the tribe of Ephraim and providing background for Jeroboam's position.

26Jeroboam son of Nebat also rebelled against the king. He was an Ephraimite from Zeredah, and his mother was a widow named Zeruah; he was one of Solomon's officials.

Jeroboam's calf worship linked to Nebat's name

Nebat's name is repeatedly connected to the sin his son introduced by setting up golden calves in Bethel and Dan.

29But he did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, into which he had led Israel—the golden calves at Bethel and at Dan.
3Still, he clung to the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin; he did not turn away from them.
