The word of the LORD came to Jehu son of Hanani against Baasha:
"I lifted you out of the dust and made you ruler over my people Israel, but you walked in the way of Jeroboam and led my people Israel into sin, provoking me to anger with their sins.
So now I will sweep away Baasha and his house, and I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam son of Nebat.
Anyone belonging to Baasha who dies in the city the dogs will eat, and anyone of his who dies in the open country the birds of the sky will eat."
The rest of the acts of Baasha, what he did and his exploits—are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
Baasha rested with his fathers and was buried in Tirzah, and his son Elah became king in his place.
Moreover, through the prophet Jehu son of Hanani the word of the LORD had come against Baasha and his house, both because of all the evil he had done in the eyes of the LORD, provoking him to anger by the work of his hands and becoming like the house of Jeroboam, and because he had struck down Jeroboam's house.
In the twenty-sixth year of Asa king of Judah, Elah son of Baasha became king over Israel in Tirzah, and he reigned two years.
His servant Zimri, commander of half the chariots, conspired against him while Elah was in Tirzah, getting drunk in the house of Arza, who was in charge of the palace at Tirzah.
Zimri came in, struck him down, and killed him, in the twenty-seventh year of Asa king of Judah, and he became king in his place.
As soon as he began to reign and was seated on his throne, he struck down the whole house of Baasha. He did not leave him a single male, neither kinsman nor friend.
So Zimri destroyed the entire house of Baasha, according to the word of the LORD spoken against Baasha through the prophet Jehu—
because of all the sins of Baasha and the sins of his son Elah, which they committed and led Israel to commit, provoking the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger with their worthless idols.
The rest of the acts of Elah and all that he did—are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
In the twenty-seventh year of Asa king of Judah, Zimri reigned seven days in Tirzah. The troops were encamped against Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines.
When the encamped troops heard that Zimri had conspired and had struck down the king, all Israel in the camp made Omri, the commander of the army, king over Israel that very day.
Then Omri and all Israel with him went up from Gibbethon and laid siege to Tirzah.
When Zimri saw that the city had been taken, he went into the citadel of the royal palace, set the palace on fire around him, and died—
because of the sins he had committed, doing evil in the eyes of the LORD, walking in the way of Jeroboam and in the sin he committed, leading Israel into sin.

Then the people of Israel were split in two: half the people followed Tibni son of Ginath to make him king, and half followed Omri.
But the people who followed Omri proved stronger than those who followed Tibni son of Ginath. So Tibni died, and Omri became king.
In the thirty-first year of Asa king of Judah, Omri became king over Israel, and he reigned twelve years, six of them in Tirzah.
He bought the hill of Samaria from Shemer for two talents of silver, and he built up the hill and named the city he built Samaria, after Shemer, the owner of the hill.
Omri did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and he acted more wickedly than all who were before him.
He followed the whole way of Jeroboam son of Nebat and his sin, which he had led Israel to commit, provoking the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger with their worthless idols.

Omri rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria, and his son Ahab became king in his place.
Ahab son of Omri became king over Israel in the thirty-eighth year of Asa king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel in Samaria twenty-two years.
Ahab son of Omri did evil in the eyes of the LORD, more than all who were before him.
As if it were a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, he took as his wife Jezebel, daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and he went and served Baal and worshiped him.
He set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal that he built in Samaria.
Ahab also made an Asherah pole. He did more to provoke the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger than all the kings of Israel before him.
In his days Hiel of Bethel rebuilt Jericho. He laid its foundation at the cost of Abiram his firstborn and set up its gates at the cost of Segub his youngest, according to the word the LORD had spoken through Joshua son of Nun.[^1] [^1]: See Joshua 6:26, where Joshua pronounced this curse on anyone who would rebuild Jericho.
