Otni was a Levite from the family of Korah, son of Shemaiah and grandson of Obed-Edom. He served as a gatekeeper at God's house in Jerusalem during King David's reign. He is mentioned in the genealogy of Levitical gatekeepers in 1 Chronicles.

Obed-Edom's descendants were appointed as gatekeepers and were known as capable men fit for service.

וּלְעֹבֵ֥ד אֱדֹ֖ם בָּנִ֑ים שְׁמַֽעְיָ֤ה הַבְּכוֹר֙ יְהוֹזָבָ֣ד הַשֵּׁנִ֔י יוֹאָ֤ח הַשְּׁלִשִׁי֙ וְשָׂכָ֣ר הָרְבִיעִ֔י וּנְתַנְאֵ֖ל הַחֲמִישִֽׁי׃ ‬
5Ammiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh, Peullethai the eighth—for God had blessed him.
עַמִּיאֵ֤ל הַשִּׁשִּׁי֙ יִשָׂשכָ֣ר הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י פְּעֻלְּתַ֖י הַשְּׁמִינִ֑י כִּ֥י בֵרֲכ֖וֹ אֱלֹהִֽים׃ פ ‬
6To Shemaiah his son were born sons who ruled over their father's house, for they were men of great ability.
וְלִֽשְׁמַֽעְיָ֤ה בְנוֹ֙ נוֹלַ֣ד בָּנִ֔ים הַמִּמְשָׁלִ֖ים לְבֵ֣ית אֲבִיהֶ֑ם כִּֽי־גִבּ֥וֹרֵי חַ֖יִל הֵֽמָּה׃ ‬

8All these were descendants of Obed-edom—they, their sons, and their relatives—men of ability with strength for the work: sixty-two in all belonging to Obed-edom.

Organization of the Gatekeeper Service

King David organized the gatekeeper service at the sanctuary, where the Levites were assigned in shifts to guard the gates of the Lord's house.

1The divisions of the gatekeepers: From the Korahites: Meshelemiah son of Kore, one of the sons of Asaph.
לְמַחְלְק֖וֹת לְשֹׁעֲרִ֑ים לַקָּרְחִ֕ים מְשֶֽׁלֶמְיָ֥הוּ בֶן־קֹרֵ֖א מִן־בְּנֵ֥י אָסָֽף׃ ‬
2Meshelemiah had sons: Zechariah the firstborn, Jediael the second, Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth,
וְלִמְשֶֽׁלֶמְיָ֖הוּ בָּנִ֑ים זְכַרְיָ֤הוּ הַבְּכוֹר֙ יְדִֽיעֲאֵ֣ל הַשֵּׁנִ֔י זְבַדְיָ֙הוּ֙ הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔י יַתְנִיאֵ֖ל הָרְבִיעִֽי׃ ‬
3Elam the fifth, Jehohanan the sixth, Eliehoenai the seventh.
עֵילָ֤ם הַחֲמִישִׁי֙ יְהוֹחָנָ֣ן הַשִּׁשִּׁ֔י אֶלְיְהוֹעֵינַ֖י הַשְּׁבִיעִֽי׃ ‬

Shemaiah's Sons Described as Capable Men

Shemaiah's sons, including Othni, were described as capable men with great strength, and in total there were 62 capable men from Obed-Edom's family.

8All these were descendants of Obed-edom—they, their sons, and their relatives—men of ability with strength for the work: sixty-two in all belonging to Obed-edom.

9Meshelemiah had sons and relatives, capable men—eighteen in all.
וְלִמְשֶֽׁלֶמְיָ֗הוּ בָּנִ֧ים וְאַחִ֛ים בְּנֵי־חָ֖יִל שְׁמוֹנָ֥ה עָשָֽׂר׃ ס ‬
