Anointed as King

Samuel anointed the young David to become Israel's next king.

11So he asked Jesse, "Are these all the young men you have?" "There is still the youngest," Jesse answered. "He is out tending the sheep." Samuel said, "Send for him. We will not sit down until he comes here."
12So he sent for him and brought him in. He had a ruddy complexion, fine eyes, and a handsome face. And the LORD said, "Rise and anoint him; this is the one."
13So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon David. Then Samuel set out and returned to Ramah.

Victory over Goliath

David defeated the Philistine giant Goliath with a sling and a stone.

45David answered, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
46This very day the LORD will hand you over to me. I will strike you down and cut off your head, and this day I will give the corpses of the Philistine army to the birds of the sky and the wild animals of the earth. Then the whole earth will know that Israel has a God,
47and all who are gathered here will know that the LORD does not save with sword or spear. The battle belongs to the LORD, and he will hand you over to us."
48When the Philistine rose and came forward to meet David, David hurried and ran toward the battle line to face the Philistine.
49Reaching into his bag, David took out a stone, slung it, and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.
50So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; he struck him down and killed him, though he had no sword in his hand.

Friendship with Jonathan

David and Jonathan formed a deep friendship that lasted a lifetime.

1When David had finished speaking with Saul, Jonathan's soul was bound to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
3Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.
4Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his armor, his sword, his bow, and his belt.

Jerusalem Becomes Capital

David conquered Jerusalem and made it Israel's capital.

6The king and his men marched on Jerusalem against the Jebusites who lived there. They said to David, "You will never get in here. Even the blind and the lame could drive you off"—meaning, "David will never get in here."
7But David captured the stronghold of Zion—that is, the City of David.
9David took up residence in the stronghold and called it the City of David, and he built up the area around it, from the Millo inward.
10And David went on and grew greater and greater, for the LORD God of hosts was with him.

The Sin with Bathsheba

David sinned with Bathsheba and arranged for her husband Uriah to die.

2One evening David got up from his bed and walked about on the roof of the king's house. From the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful.
3David sent someone to inquire about her, and he was told, "That is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite."
4So David sent messengers and had her brought to him, and he slept with her—she had just purified herself from her uncleanness—and then she returned to her house.
14In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah.
15In the letter he wrote: "Put Uriah at the front, where the fighting is fiercest, then pull back from him so that he is struck down and dies."
26When Uriah's wife heard that her husband Uriah was dead, she mourned for him.
27When the mourning was over, David sent for her and brought her into his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But what David had done was evil in the eyes of the LORD.

Promise of an Eternal Kingdom

God promised David that his kingdom would last forever through the Messiah.

12When your days are done and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom.
13He is the one who will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
16Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before you; your throne will be established forever.'"
1This is the record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Übersetzung

The Greek opens abruptly with just two words, «Βίβλος γενέσεως» — literally "book of origin" or "scroll of beginning" — with no verb at all. Because English cannot easily begin a sentence that way and still read smoothly aloud, "This is the record of the genealogy" supplies the missing verb and makes the line function as a clear heading. Other defensible renderings include "The book of the genealogy," "A record of the origin," or, taking the phrase as a title for the whole Gospel, "The account of the beginnings of Jesus Christ." The word "Christ" is kept as a name-like title here rather than translated "Messiah" or "Anointed One," since the two words together already function almost as a proper name in this Gospel's opening line. The repeated "the son of" preserves the stepped, chant-like rhythm of the Greek, which piles the phrases up without connectives.

Sprachlich

«Γενέσεως» is the genitive of «γένεσις», from the root meaning "to come into being." It can denote birth, origin, lineage, or history, and its range is deliberately wide. The same word titles the first book of the Greek Old Testament, and the phrase "book of the genesis" appears there at the seams of the creation and genealogy accounts, so the opening words sound like a quotation. Note also that the Greek strings the descent together without "and" or any linking verb — a compressed, formulaic style typical of Semitic genealogical registers rendered into Greek.

Theologisch

The order of names is striking: David is placed before Abraham, reversing chronology. This puts the royal claim first — Jesus as heir to the throne — and then anchors it in the covenant promise that through Abraham's offspring all nations would be blessed. Together the two names frame the Gospel's double concern: a king for Israel and a blessing for the whole world. The echo of the opening of Genesis also suggests that what follows is not merely one man's family record but a new beginning for creation itself.

Historisch

Genealogies carried real weight in first-century Jewish life. They established priestly eligibility, tribal land claims, and — crucially for messianic hope — descent from David. Public and family registers were kept, and claims of Davidic ancestry were known and discussed in this period. A list of this kind at the head of a document told an ancient reader immediately what sort of claim was being made about its subject.

Textkritisch

The wording of this verse is remarkably stable across the manuscript tradition; the witnesses agree on all seven words. Some later copies show the expected scribal confusion between «γενέσεως» (origin, genealogy) and the similar-sounding word for "birth," a variation that appears more substantially a few verses later in this same chapter.

Liturgisch

This opening and the genealogy that follows have long been read at services near the celebration of the Nativity, often chanted rather than merely spoken, so that the cadence of the names becomes part of the proclamation.
