Shimea (also known as Shammah or Shimei) was one of Jesse's sons and thus a brother of King David. He is best known as the father of Jonathan, who killed a Philistine giant, and as part of David's close family circle. In David's lineage, Shimea played a role as a member of the royal family in the united kingdom.

Jesse's Sons Presented to Samuel

When the prophet Samuel came to Bethlehem to anoint a new king, Jesse's sons, including Shimea (Shammah), were presented to him, but none of them were chosen until David arrived.

10Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, "The LORD has not chosen these."
11So he asked Jesse, "Are these all the young men you have?" "There is still the youngest," Jesse answered. "He is out tending the sheep." Samuel said, "Send for him. We will not sit down until he comes here."

Shimea Among His Brothers in Saul's Army

Shimea was among David's older brothers who served in Saul's army when the Philistines threatened Israel, during the period when Goliath challenged the Israelites.

13Jesse's three oldest sons had gone with Saul to the war. The names of the three who went to battle were Eliab the firstborn, Abinadab the second, and Shammah the third.
14David was the youngest. The three oldest had followed Saul,

Shimea's Son Jonathan Kills a Giant

Shimea's son Jonathan (also called Jonathan ben Shimea) killed a Philistine giant who had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot.

20And there was another battle, at Gath, where there was a huge man with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot—twenty-four in all. He too was descended from the Rapha.
21When he taunted Israel, Jonathan son of Shimeah, David's brother, struck him down.

Jonadab, Shimea's Son, Gives Advice to Amnon

Shimea's son Jonadab was known as a wise but cunning man who gave advice to David's son Amnon that led to the tragic incident involving Tamar.

3Now Amnon had a friend named Jonadab, the son of David's brother Shimeah, and Jonadab was a very shrewd man.
4He said to him, "Why are you, the king's son, so haggard morning after morning? Won't you tell me?" Amnon answered, "I am in love with Tamar, the sister of my brother Absalom."
5Jonadab said to him, "Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill. When your father comes to see you, say to him, 'Please let my sister Tamar come and give me something to eat. Let her prepare the food where I can see it, so that I may watch and eat from her hand.'"

Shimea Mentioned in David's Genealogy

Shimea is listed among Jesse's sons in the genealogies of Chronicles, where he is called Shimea and counted as the third son.

13Jesse fathered Eliab his firstborn, Abinadab the second, Shimea the third,
16Their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. The sons of Zeruiah: Abishai, Joab, and Asahel—three.
