Mentioned in the Genealogy of Issachar

Shomer is listed as a son of Heber in the genealogy of the tribe of Issachar, part of the genealogical lists in Chronicles.

32Heber fathered Japhlet, Shomer, and Hotham, and their sister Shua.

Warriors of Issachar

The tribe of Issachar, including Shomer's lineage, counted brave warriors who were registered in the genealogical records.

1The sons of Issachar: Tola, Puah, Jashub, and Shimron — four in all.

2The sons of Tola: Uzzi, Rephaiah, Jeriel, Jahmai, Ibsam, and Samuel — heads of their fathers' houses. Of the line of Tola they were mighty warriors in their generations; in the days of David their number was twenty-two thousand six hundred.

Heber's Descendants

Shomer was one of several sons of Heber, and his lineage was preserved in Israel's tribal history as part of the tribe of Asher, which also mentions a Shomer.

Shomer's Connection to King Joash's Murder

Another Shomer (Shimrith) is mentioned as the mother of Josabad, one of those who conspired against and killed King Joash of Judah.

25When the Arameans withdrew, they left him severely wounded. His own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed him on his bed. So he died, and they buried him in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.

26Those who conspired against him were Zabad, son of Shimeath the Ammonite woman, and Jehozabad, son of Shimrith the Moabite woman.
