Solomon son of David established himself firmly over his kingdom, for the LORD his God was with him and made him exceedingly great.
Solomon spoke to all Israel—to the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, to the judges, and to every leader in all Israel, the heads of the families.
Then Solomon and the whole assembly with him went to the high place at Gibeon, for God's tent of meeting was there, the one Moses the servant of the LORD had made in the wilderness.
David, however, had brought up the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim to the place he had prepared for it, for he had pitched a tent for it in Jerusalem.
But the bronze altar that Bezalel son of Uri, son of Hur, had made was there before the tabernacle of the LORD, and Solomon and the assembly sought the LORD there.
Solomon went up to the bronze altar before the LORD at the tent of meeting and offered a thousand burnt offerings on it.
That night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, "Ask what I should give you."
Solomon answered God, "You showed great faithful love to my father David, and you have made me king in his place.
Now, LORD God, let your promise to my father David be confirmed, for you have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth.
Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who can govern this great people of yours?"
God said to Solomon, "Because this was in your heart, and you did not ask for riches, wealth, or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and because you did not ask for long life, but asked for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king—
wisdom and knowledge are granted to you. And I will also give you riches, wealth, and honor such as no king before you has had and none after you will have."
So Solomon came from the high place at Gibeon, from before the tent of meeting, to Jerusalem, and he reigned over Israel.
Solomon gathered chariots and horsemen. He had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horsemen, which he stationed in the chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem.
The king made silver and gold as common in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar as plentiful as the sycamores of the foothills.
Solomon's horses were imported from Egypt and from Kue; the king's traders acquired them from Kue at the going price. [Footnote: Kue was a region in Cilicia, in what is now southern Turkey, known for its horses.]
They imported a chariot from Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver and a horse for a hundred and fifty. And through these same traders they were exported to all the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Aram.
Then Solomon resolved to build a house for the name of the LORD and a royal palace for himself.
