Jacob flees to Aram and serves for a woman
Hosea reminds how Jacob fled to the plains of Aram, where he served for a woman and tended sheep for her. The prophet sets this historical memory of the patriarch in contrast to Israel's contemporary idolatry at Gilgal and wickedness in Gilead.
Oseas 12,12-13
12If Gilead is full of iniquity, they are nothing but falsehood. In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls; their altars, too, are like heaps of stones on the furrows of a field.
אִם־גִּלְעָ֥ד אָ֙וֶן֙ אַךְ־שָׁ֣וְא הָי֔וּ בַּגִּלְגָּ֖ל שְׁוָרִ֣ים זִבֵּ֑חוּ גַּ֤ם מִזְבְּחוֹתָם֙ כְּגַלִּ֔ים עַ֖ל תַּלְמֵ֥י שָׂדָֽי׃
13Jacob fled to the land of Aram; Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he tended sheep.
וַיִּבְרַ֥ח יַעֲקֹ֖ב שְׂדֵ֣ה אֲרָ֑ם וַיַּעֲבֹ֤ד יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בְּאִשָּׁ֔ה וּבְאִשָּׁ֖ה שָׁמָֽר׃
