Jacob's Struggle with God in the Prophecy of Hosea
The prophet Hosea reminds Israel of Jacob's life: how he grasped his brother's heel while still in the womb and later wrestled with God and an angel, weeping and pleading for a blessing. In Bethel, God met him, and the Lord, the God of hosts, is His name. Hosea uses Jacob's experience as an appeal to Ephraim to turn back to the Lord and hold fast to love and justice.
Oseas 12,3-6
3The LORD has a case against Judah; he will call Jacob to account for his ways and repay him for what he has done.
וְרִ֥יב לַֽיהוָ֖ה עִם־יְהוּדָ֑ה וְלִפְקֹ֤ד עַֽל־יַעֲקֹב֙ כִּדְרָכָ֔יו כְּמַעֲלָלָ֖יו יָשִׁ֥יב לֽוֹ׃
4In the womb he grasped his brother's heel, and in his strength he wrestled with God.
בַּבֶּ֖טֶן עָקַ֣ב אֶת־אָחִ֑יו וּבְאוֹנ֖וֹ שָׂרָ֥ה אֶת־אֱלֹהִֽים׃
5He struggled with the angel and prevailed; he wept and pleaded for his favor. At Bethel he found him, and there he spoke with us—
וַיָּ֤שַׂר אֶל־מַלְאָךְ֙ וַיֻּכָ֔ל בָּכָ֖ה וַיִּתְחַנֶּן־ל֑וֹ בֵּֽית־אֵל֙ יִמְצָאֶ֔נּוּ וְשָׁ֖ם יְדַבֵּ֥ר עִמָּֽנוּ׃
6the LORD, the God of hosts; the LORD is his name.
וַֽיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י הַצְּבָא֑וֹת יְהוָ֖ה זִכְרֽוֹ׃
