The Feeding of the Four Thousand
After a large crowd had been with Jesus for three days without food, he felt compassion for them. The disciples had only seven loaves and a few small fish. Jesus gave thanks, broke the bread, and had the disciples distribute it to the people. About four thousand people were fed, and seven baskets of leftovers were collected. Markus 8:1-9

1In those days, when again a large crowd had gathered and had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said,
Ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις ⸂πάλιν πολλοῦ⸃ ὄχλου ὄντος καὶ μὴ ἐχόντων τί φάγωσιν, ⸀προσκαλεσάμενος τοὺς ⸀μαθητὰς λέγει αὐτοῖς·
2"I have compassion on the crowd. They have been with me three days now and have nothing to eat.
Σπλαγχνίζομαι ἐπὶ τὸν ὄχλον ὅτι ἤδη ἡμέραι τρεῖς προσμένουσίν μοι καὶ οὐκ ἔχουσιν τί φάγωσιν·
3If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way — and some of them have come a long distance."
καὶ ἐὰν ἀπολύσω αὐτοὺς νήστεις εἰς οἶκον αὐτῶν, ἐκλυθήσονται ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ· ⸂καί τινες⸃ αὐτῶν ⸀ἀπὸ μακρόθεν ⸀ἥκασιν.
4His disciples answered, "Where out here in this wilderness could anyone find enough bread to feed them?"
καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ⸀ὅτι Πόθεν τούτους δυνήσεταί τις ὧδε χορτάσαι ἄρτων ἐπʼ ἐρημίας;
5He asked them, "How many loaves do you have?" "Seven," they said.
καὶ ⸀ἠρώτα αὐτούς· Πόσους ἔχετε ἄρτους; οἱ δὲ εἶπαν· Ἑπτά.
6So he told the crowd to sit down on the ground. Taking the seven loaves, he gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to his disciples to distribute, and they set them before the crowd.
καὶ ⸀παραγγέλλει τῷ ὄχλῳ ἀναπεσεῖν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς· καὶ λαβὼν τοὺς ἑπτὰ ἄρτους εὐχαριστήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ ἐδίδου τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ ἵνα ⸀παρατιθῶσιν καὶ παρέθηκαν τῷ ὄχλῳ.
7They also had a few small fish. He blessed them as well and told the disciples to distribute them too.
καὶ εἶχον ἰχθύδια ὀλίγα· καὶ εὐλογήσας ⸀αὐτὰ εἶπεν ⸂καὶ ταῦτα παρατιθέναι⸃.
8The people ate and were satisfied, and the disciples gathered up seven baskets of leftover pieces.
⸂καὶ ἔφαγον⸃ καὶ ἐχορτάσθησαν, καὶ ἦραν περισσεύματα κλασμάτων ἑπτὰ σπυρίδας.
9There were about four thousand present. Then he sent them away,
ἦσαν ⸀δὲ ὡς τετρακισχίλιοι. καὶ ἀπέλυσεν αὐτούς.
