The Potter and the Clay
The Lord sends Jeremiah down to the house of the potter, where he sees the potter shaping a broken clay vessel on the wheel. God uses this as an illustration of how He deals with the house of Israel: If a nation turns from its evil, He relents of the disaster He planned; but if it does what is evil, He relents of the good He had promised. Jeremiah 18:1-10
Jeremías 18,1-10
1The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
הַדָּבָר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָיָ֣ה אֶֽל־יִרְמְיָ֔הוּ מֵאֵ֥ת יְהוָ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר׃
2"Get up and go down to the potter's house, and there I will let you hear my words."
ק֥וּם וְיָרַדְתָּ֖ בֵּ֣ית הַיּוֹצֵ֑ר וְשָׁ֖מָּה אַשְׁמִֽיעֲךָ֥ אֶת־דְּבָרָֽי׃
3So I went down to the potter's house, and there he was, working at the wheel.
וָאֵרֵ֖ד בֵּ֣ית הַיּוֹצֵ֑ר *והנהו **וְהִנֵּה־**ה֛וּא עֹשֶׂ֥ה מְלָאכָ֖ה עַל־הָאָבְנָֽיִם׃
4But the vessel he was shaping from the clay was ruined in his hands, so he made it over into another vessel, whatever seemed right to him.
וְנִשְׁחַ֣ת הַכְּלִ֗י אֲשֶׁ֨ר ה֥וּא עֹשֶׂ֛ה בַּחֹ֖מֶר בְּיַ֣ד הַיּוֹצֵ֑ר וְשָׁ֗ב וַֽיַּעֲשֵׂ֙הוּ֙ כְּלִ֣י אַחֵ֔ר כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר יָשַׁ֛ר בְּעֵינֵ֥י הַיּוֹצֵ֖ר לַעֲשֽׂוֹת׃ פ
5Then the word of the LORD came to me:
וַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־יְהוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֽוֹר׃
6"House of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter does? declares the LORD. Look, like clay in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand, house of Israel.
הֲכַיּוֹצֵ֨ר הַזֶּ֜ה לֹא־אוּכַ֨ל לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת לָכֶ֛ם בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל נְאֻם־יְהוָ֑ה הִנֵּ֤ה כַחֹ֙מֶר֙ בְּיַ֣ד הַיּוֹצֵ֔ר כֵּן־אַתֶּ֥ם בְּיָדִ֖י בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ ס
7If at any moment I speak against a nation or a kingdom, to uproot it, tear it down, and destroy it,
רֶ֣גַע אֲדַבֵּ֔ר עַל־גּ֖וֹי וְעַל־מַמְלָכָ֑ה לִנְת֥וֹשׁ וְלִנְת֖וֹץ וּֽלְהַאֲבִֽיד׃
8and that nation against which I have spoken turns from its evil, then I will relent of the disaster I intended to bring on it.
וְשָׁב֙ הַגּ֣וֹי הַה֔וּא מֵרָ֣עָת֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי עָלָ֑יו וְנִֽחַמְתִּי֙ עַל־הָ֣רָעָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר חָשַׁ֖בְתִּי לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת לֽוֹ׃ ס
9And if at any moment I speak about a nation or a kingdom, to build it up and plant it,
וְרֶ֣גַע אֲדַבֵּ֔ר עַל־גּ֖וֹי וְעַל־מַמְלָכָ֑ה לִבְנֹ֖ת וְלִנְטֹֽעַ׃
10but it does what is evil in my eyes and will not listen to my voice, then I will relent of the good I had promised to do for it.
וְעָשָׂ֤ה *הרעה **הָרַע֙ בְּעֵינַ֔י לְבִלְתִּ֖י שְׁמֹ֣עַ בְּקוֹלִ֑י וְנִֽחַמְתִּי֙ עַל־הַטּוֹבָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָמַ֖רְתִּי לְהֵיטִ֥יב אוֹתֽוֹ׃ ס
