The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:

"Get up and go down to the potter's house, and there I will let you hear my words."

So I went down to the potter's house, and there he was, working at the wheel.

But the vessel he was shaping from the clay was ruined in his hands, so he made it over into another vessel, whatever seemed right to him.

Then the word of the LORD came to me:

"House of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter does? declares the LORD. Look, like clay in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand, house of Israel.

If at any moment I speak against a nation or a kingdom, to uproot it, tear it down, and destroy it,

and that nation against which I have spoken turns from its evil, then I will relent of the disaster I intended to bring on it.

And if at any moment I speak about a nation or a kingdom, to build it up and plant it,

but it does what is evil in my eyes and will not listen to my voice, then I will relent of the good I had promised to do for it.

Now say to the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: This is what the LORD says: I am shaping disaster against you and devising a plan against you. Turn back, each of you, from your evil way, and make your ways and your deeds good.

But they say, "It is hopeless. We will follow our own plans; each of us will act on the stubbornness of his evil heart."

Therefore this is what the LORD says: Ask among the nations—who has ever heard the like? Virgin Israel has done a thing too horrible for words.

Does the snow of Lebanon ever leave the rocky slopes? Do the cold waters that flow from afar ever run dry?

Yet my people have forgotten me; they burn incense to worthless idols. Those idols have made them stumble in their ways, off the ancient roads, to walk on side paths, on a road never paved,

making their land a desolation, an object of endless scorn. All who pass by will be appalled and shake their heads.

Like a wind from the east I will scatter them before the enemy. I will show them my back, not my face, on the day of their calamity.

Then they said, "Come, let us make plans against Jeremiah, for instruction will never be lost from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor a word from the prophet. Come, let us strike him down with the tongue and pay no attention to anything he says."

Give heed to me, LORD; listen to what my accusers are saying!

Should evil be the payment for good? Yet they have dug a pit for my life. Remember how I stood before you and spoke on their behalf, to turn your wrath away from them.

So hand their children over to famine; deliver them to the power of the sword. Let their wives be left childless and widowed; let their men be struck down by death, their young men cut down by the sword in battle.

Let a cry be heard from their houses when you suddenly bring raiders against them—for they have dug a pit to catch me and hidden snares for my feet.

But you, LORD, know all their plots to kill me. Do not cover over their guilt or blot out their sin from your sight. Let them be overthrown before you; deal with them in the time of your anger.

The Potter’s House (בֵּית הַיּוֹצֵר)

The potter’s workshop was likely located in the southern part of Jerusalem, near the Valley of Hinnom, where there was access to clay and water. The potter’s wheel (הָאָבְנָיִם, literally "the two stones") consisted of two horizontal stone slabs connected by a vertical axle—the lower one was turned with the feet, while the upper one held the clay.

Potter’s Work as a Prophetic Illustration

The potter’s craft was among the most visible and well-known trades in ancient Israel. Everyone knew how a potter could discard a failed vessel and start again with the same clay. This gave the image immediate impact for its listeners. God’s sovereignty over nations is compared to the potter’s absolute control over the clay—a picture also found in other Old Testament texts (Isa 29:16; 45:9; 64:7).

Conspiracy Against Jeremiah

In verse 18, Jeremiah’s opponents plan to "strike him with the tongue"—that is, to attack him with false accusations and malicious speech. They justify this by claiming that "the law will not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet"—an ironic assertion that they have other religious authorities and do not need Jeremiah.

Jeremiah’s Lament and Intercession

Verses 19–23 contain one of Jeremiah’s most intense laments. He reminds God that he has stood as an intercessor for the people (v. 20), but now asks that God should not forgive them. This tension between the prophet’s earlier intercession and his current plea for judgment reflects the deep conflict in Jeremiah’s ministry.

The Hebrew verb nacham in verses 8 and 10, often translated as "relent", does not mean that God admits error, but expresses a change in God’s course of action in response to human repentance or rebellion. The term describes God’s relational and responsive nature within the covenant relationship.

"Stubbornness of heart" (שְׁרִרוּת לִבּוֹ)

The expression in verse 12 (sherirut lev) describes a stubborn, self-willed attitude. This is a characteristic phrase used by Jeremiah that emphasizes the people’s deliberate choice to follow their own ways rather than God’s will.
