Judean and Faithful Witness at the Babylonian Court

Azariah (Hebrew: 'The Lord helps') was a young Judean of royal or noble lineage who was taken captive to Babylon during King Nebuchadnezzar's first deportation around 605 B.C. He received the Babylonian name Abednego (likely a distortion of 'Abed-Nebo', 'servant of the god Nebo') as part of the court's assimilation program. Along with Daniel, Hananiah (Shadrach) and Mishael (Meshach), he was chosen for training and service at the royal court, where the four distinguished themselves through God-given wisdom and insight. Azariah held an administrative position in the province of Babylon. He is above all known for his unwavering loyalty to the God of Israel when, together with Hananiah and Mishael, he refused to worship Nebuchadnezzar's golden image and was thrown into the blazing furnace – yet miraculously saved. The account of the three men in the fiery furnace has throughout history served as a powerful testimony to integrity and reverence for God amid the pressures of exile, demonstrating how faith in God can endure even under life-threatening persecution.

2And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the vessels of the house of God. He carried them off to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and placed the vessels in the treasury of his god.
3Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, the chief of his court officials, to bring in some of the Israelites, both from the royal family and from the nobility—
4young men without any physical defect, handsome, skilled in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge and quick to understand, and fit to serve in the king's palace. He was to teach them the writing and the language of the Chaldeans.
Daniel took the initiative so that the four young men would not defile themselves with the king's food and drink. Azariah joined Daniel, Hananiah, and Mishael in this, choosing instead vegetables and water—a test period that showed they were healthier than the others.
God gave the four young men – Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah – knowledge and understanding in all literature and wisdom. They were found ten times wiser than all the magicians and enchanters in the entire kingdom.
17To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of every kind of writing and wisdom, and Daniel also had insight into visions and dreams of every kind.
20In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his entire kingdom.
After Daniel interpreted Nebuchadnezzar's dream, he asked the king to appoint Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego over the administration of the province of Babylon, which the king granted.
49At Daniel's request the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to administer the province of Babylon, while Daniel himself remained at the king's court.
When King Nebuchadnezzar set up a golden image on the plain of Dura and commanded everyone to worship it, Azariah and his two friends Hananiah and Mishael refused to bow down, even under threat of being thrown into the blazing furnace. They declared that their God could save them, but that they would not worship the image regardless.
12There are certain Jews whom you appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These men pay no attention to you, O king. They do not serve your gods, and they do not worship the golden image you have set up."
Azariah, Hananiah, and Mishael were thrown into the blazing furnace, which had been heated seven times hotter than usual. To the king's astonishment, he saw four figures walking freely in the fire – the fourth looked 'like a son of the gods.' The three came out unharmed; not even their hair was singed, their clothes were untouched, and there was no smell of smoke on them.
19Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with fury, and the look on his face changed toward Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He ordered that the furnace be heated seven times hotter than usual,
24Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished. He rose up in alarm and said to his counselors, "Did we not throw three men, bound, into the fire?" They answered the king, "Certainly, O king."
25"But look," he said, "I see four men, unbound, walking around in the middle of the fire, and they are unharmed—and the fourth looks like a son of the gods!"
26Then Nebuchadnezzar came near the door of the blazing furnace and called out, "Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!" So Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out of the fire.
27The satraps, prefects, governors, and the king's counselors crowded around and saw these men: the fire had no power over their bodies, not a hair of their heads was singed, their robes were unharmed, and no smell of fire clung to them.
After the miracle in the fiery furnace, Nebuchadnezzar praised the God of Azariah, Hananiah, and Mishael and promoted them to even higher positions in the province of Babylon.
28Then Nebuchadnezzar declared, "Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who sent his angel and rescued his servants who trusted in him! They set aside the king's command and yielded up their bodies rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.
29Therefore I decree that any people, nation, or language that speaks offensively against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego shall be torn limb from limb and their houses reduced to rubble, for there is no other god who can rescue like this."
