In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came against Jerusalem and laid siege to it.
And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the vessels of the house of God. He carried them off to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and placed the vessels in the treasury of his god.
Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, the chief of his court officials, to bring in some of the Israelites, both from the royal family and from the nobility—
young men without any physical defect, handsome, skilled in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge and quick to understand, and fit to serve in the king's palace. He was to teach them the writing and the language of the Chaldeans.
The king assigned them a daily portion of the royal food and of the wine he drank. They were to be trained for three years, and at the end of that time they were to enter the king's service.
Among them were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, from the tribe of Judah.
The chief official gave them new names: Daniel he called Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego.
But Daniel resolved in his heart not to defile himself with the king's food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission to avoid it.
Now God had granted Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief official,
but the official said to Daniel, "I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? You would cost me my head before the king."
So Daniel said to the steward whom the chief official had put in charge of Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
"Please test your servants for ten days. Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink.
Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and deal with your servants according to what you see."
He agreed to this and tested them for ten days.
At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food.
So the steward took away their food and wine and gave them vegetables instead.
To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of every kind of writing and wisdom, and Daniel also had insight into visions and dreams of every kind.
At the end of the time set by the king for them to be brought in, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar.
The king spoke with them, and among them all none was found equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; so they entered the king's service.
In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his entire kingdom.
And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.
