Agag was the ruler of the Amalekites at the time when God commanded King Saul to carry out judgment against this people. The prophet Samuel proclaimed that God had rejected Saul as king of Israel, and then executed Agag himself in Gilgal. Balaam's prophecy about Agag
In Balaam's prophetic utterance, Agag (or an Amalekite royal title) is mentioned in connection with Israel's future greatness. It is prophesied that Israel's kingdom will be exalted above Agag, pointing forward to Israel's superiority over the Amalekites.
2This is what the LORD of hosts says: 'I have taken account of what Amalek did to Israel, how they waylaid them on the road when they came up from Egypt.
3Now go and strike Amalek. Devote to destruction everything they have. Do not spare them; put to death man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.'"
9Saul and the army spared Agag, along with the best of the sheep and cattle, the fattened animals and the lambs—everything of value. These they were unwilling to destroy; but everything despised and worthless they devoted to destruction.
The prophet Samuel confronts Saul with his disobedience to God's command. Samuel declares that obedience is better than sacrifice, and that God has rejected Saul as king over Israel.
22But Samuel said: "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
23For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and defiance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has rejected you as king."
24Then Saul said to Samuel, "I have sinned. I violated the LORD's command and your instructions, because I was afraid of the people and gave in to them.
Samuel orders that Agag be brought before him. Agag approaches Samuel—how he behaved in this moment is debated—and appears to expect the worst is over. However, Samuel declares judgment upon him and cuts him down before the Lord in Gilgal.
33But Samuel said, "As your sword has made women childless, so will your mother be childless among women." And Samuel cut Agag to pieces before the LORD at Gilgal.
In the Book of Esther, Haman is identified as an Agagite, a possible descendant of Agag and the Amalekites, who planned to exterminate the Jews in the Persian Empire.
1After these events King Ahasuerus promoted Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, advancing him and setting his seat above all the officials who were with him.
3Then Esther spoke to the king again. She fell at his feet, weeping and pleading with him to undo the evil plot of Haman the Agagite and the scheme he had devised against the Jews.
5She said, "If it pleases the king, and if I have found favor with him, and if the king thinks it right and I am pleasing in his eyes, let an order be written to revoke the letters devised by Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews in all the king's provinces.
