That same day King Ahasuerus gave Queen Esther the estate of Haman, the enemy of the Jews. And Mordecai came before the king, for Esther had told him how he was related to her.
The king took off his signet ring, which he had taken back from Haman, and gave it to Mordecai; and Esther put Mordecai in charge of Haman's estate.
Then Esther spoke to the king again. She fell at his feet, weeping and pleading with him to undo the evil plot of Haman the Agagite and the scheme he had devised against the Jews.
The king extended the golden scepter to Esther, and Esther rose and stood before him.
She said, "If it pleases the king, and if I have found favor with him, and if the king thinks it right and I am pleasing in his eyes, let an order be written to revoke the letters devised by Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews in all the king's provinces.
For how can I bear to watch the disaster that is to fall on my people? How can I bear to watch the destruction of my kindred?"
King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, "See, I have given Haman's estate to Esther, and he himself has been hanged on the gallows because he raised his hand against the Jews.
Now you write concerning the Jews whatever seems best to you, in the king's name, and seal it with the king's signet ring; for no document written in the king's name and sealed with the king's ring can be revoked."
So the king's secretaries were summoned at that time, on the twenty-third day of the third month, the month of Sivan, and an edict was written exactly as Mordecai directed, to the Jews and to the satraps, the governors, and the officials of the hundred and twenty-seven provinces from India to Ethiopia—to each province in its own script and to each people in its own language, and to the Jews in their own script and language.
He wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus, sealed it with the king's signet ring, and sent the letters by mounted couriers riding swift royal horses bred from the finest stock.
By these letters the king granted the Jews in every city the right to assemble and defend their lives—to destroy, kill, and annihilate any armed force of any people or province that might attack them, together with the women and children of those attackers, and to plunder their goods—
on a single day in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar.
A copy of the document was to be issued as law in every province and published to all the peoples, so that the Jews would be ready on that day to take revenge on their enemies.
The couriers, riding the swift royal horses, went out in urgent haste at the king's command, and the decree was also issued in the citadel of Susa.
Mordecai left the king's presence wearing royal robes of blue and white, a large golden crown, and a purple cloak of fine linen. And the city of Susa shouted and rejoiced.
For the Jews there was light and gladness, joy and honor.
In every province and every city, wherever the king's command and decree arrived, there was joy and gladness among the Jews, with feasting and celebration. And many of the peoples of the land professed themselves Jews, because the fear of the Jews had fallen upon them.
