Dodavahu's Son Prophesies Against Jehoshaphat

Eliezer, son of Dodavahu from Maresha, prophesied against King Jehoshaphat because he had allied himself with King Ahaziah of Israel. The prophecy foretold the destruction of the ships that Jehoshaphat had built.

37Then Eliezer son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, "Because you have allied yourself with Ahaziah, the LORD will break apart what you have made." So the ships were wrecked and could not sail to Tarshish.

Jehoshaphat's Failed Trading Fleet

As a result of the prophecy, the ships that Jehoshaphat had built in Ezion-Geber to sail to Tarshish were destroyed and never completed their journey.

36He joined with him to build ships to go to Tarshish, and they built the ships at Ezion-geber.
37Then Eliezer son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, "Because you have allied yourself with Ahaziah, the LORD will break apart what you have made." So the ships were wrecked and could not sail to Tarshish.

Jehoshaphat's Alliance with Ahaziah

King Jehoshaphat of Judah made an alliance with the wicked King Ahaziah of Israel to build trading ships, which led to God's judgment through Eliezer, son of Dodavahu.

35Later, Jehoshaphat king of Judah made an alliance with Ahaziah king of Israel, who acted wickedly.

Dodavahu's Hometown Maresha

They added a man from Mareshah, an important city in Judah that was also the hometown of the prophet Micah. The city was located in the lowlands of southern Judah and had strategic significance.

37Then Eliezer son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, "Because you have allied yourself with Ahaziah, the LORD will break apart what you have made." So the ships were wrecked and could not sail to Tarshish.
