Philip

The Apostle from Bethsaida

La Iglesia primitivaApostleDisciplec. 5–80 AD

Philip was one of Jesus' twelve apostles, from the same town as Peter and Andrew. He was called directly by Jesus and immediately brought Nathanael. Philip is known for his practical questions and for bringing others to Jesus—including the Greeks who wanted to meet him.

The Calling by Jesus

Jesus found Philip and said, 'Follow me!' Philip was from Bethsaida, the same town as Andrew and Peter.

43The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, "Follow me."
44Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.

He Brought Nathanael

Philip found Nathanael and told him about Jesus of Nazareth. When Nathanael doubted, Philip said, 'Come and see!'

45Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law, and the prophets as well: Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth."
46"Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip.

The Feeding

Jesus tested Philip with the question of where they could buy bread for the crowd. Philip replied that it would cost a fortune.

5When Jesus looked up and saw the great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, "Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?"
ἐπάρας οὖν ⸂τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ὁ Ἰησοῦς⸃ καὶ θεασάμενος ὅτι πολὺς ὄχλος ἔρχεται πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγει ⸀πρὸς Φίλιππον· Πόθεν ⸀ἀγοράσωμεν ἄρτους ἵνα φάγωσιν οὗτοι;
6He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was about to do.
7Philip answered him, "Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get even a little."

The Greeks

When some Greeks wanted to meet Jesus, they went to Philip, who then went to Andrew, and together they brought them to Jesus.

20Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks.
21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, "Sir, we would like to see Jesus."
22Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.

Show Us the Father

At the Lord's Supper, Philip prayed: 'Show us the Father.' Jesus answered: 'Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.'

8Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us."
9Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?
λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· ⸂Τοσούτῳ χρόνῳ⸃ μεθʼ ὑμῶν εἰμι καὶ οὐκ ἔγνωκάς με, Φίλιππε; ὁ ἑωρακὼς ἐμὲ ἑώρακεν τὸν πατέρα· ⸀πῶς σὺ λέγεις· Δεῖξον ἡμῖν τὸν πατέρα;
10Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak to you I do not speak on my own; it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his works.
11Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or else believe on account of the works themselves.
