6While Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,

7a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very costly perfume, and she poured it over his head as he reclined at the table.

8When the disciples saw it, they were indignant. "Why this waste?" they said.

9"This could have been sold for a great deal and the money given to the poor."

10But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why are you troubling this woman? She has done a beautiful thing for me.

11You will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me.

12When she poured this perfume on my body, she was preparing me for burial.

13Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in all the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."

4Some of those present were indignant. "Why this waste of perfume?" they said to one another.

5"It could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor." And they scolded her harshly.

6But Jesus said, "Leave her alone. Why are you troubling her? She has done a beautiful thing for me.

7The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them whenever you wish. But you will not always have me.

8She has done what she could. She has anointed my body in advance for burial.

9Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in all the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."

4But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, the one who was about to betray him, said,

5"Why wasn't this perfume sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?"

6He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the money box and used to take what was put into it.

7So Jesus said, "Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial.

8The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me."

MateoMatthew 21:1-11

1When they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples,

2telling them, "Go into the village ahead of you, and right away you will find a donkey tied there, with a colt beside her. Untie them and bring them to me.

3If anyone says anything to you, tell him, 'The Lord needs them,' and he will send them at once."

4This happened to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

5"Say to the daughter of Zion: Look, your king is coming to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden."

6The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them.

7They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their cloaks on them, and he sat on them.

8A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.

9The crowds who went ahead of him and those who followed kept shouting: "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!" [Footnote: Hosanna is a Hebrew cry meaning "Save, we pray!" used here as a shout of praise and welcome.]

10When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred, asking, "Who is this?"

11And the crowds answered, "This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee."

1As they approached Jerusalem, coming to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples ahead,

2telling them, "Go into the village ahead of you. As soon as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.

3If anyone asks you, 'Why are you doing this?' say, 'The Lord needs it, and he will send it back here shortly.'"

4They went and found a colt tied at a doorway out in the street, and they untied it.

5Some of the people standing there asked them, "What are you doing, untying that colt?"

6They answered as Jesus had told them, and the people let them go.

7They brought the colt to Jesus, threw their cloaks over it, and he sat on it.

8Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields.

9Those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting: "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

10Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!"

11Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. He looked around at everything, and since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.

28After saying this, Jesus went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.

29As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the mountain called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,

30saying, "Go to the village ahead of you. As you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.

31If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' say this: 'The Lord needs it.'"

32Those who were sent went and found it just as he had told them.

33As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?"

34They answered, "The Lord needs it."

35They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt, and helped him onto it.

36As he rode along, people spread their cloaks on the road.

37When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen:

38"Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"

39Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples!"

40He answered, "I tell you, if they keep silent, the stones will cry out."

41As he came near and saw the city, he wept over it,

42saying, "If you had only known on this day what would bring you peace! But now it is hidden from your eyes.

43The days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a siege wall against you, surround you, and hem you in on every side.

44They will level you to the ground, you and your children within your walls, and they will not leave one stone on another in you, because you did not recognize the time of God's coming to you."

13They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting: "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel!"

14Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:

15"Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion; look, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt."

16His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and that they had done these things for him.

17So the crowd kept bearing witness—the crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead.

18This was also why the crowd went out to meet him: they had heard that he had done this sign.

19So the Pharisees said to one another, "You see, you are getting nowhere. Look, the whole world has gone after him."

And Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
Truly, truly, I tell you: unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.
Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
Now my soul is troubled. And what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No—for this purpose I came to this hour.
Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven: "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again."
The crowd standing there heard it and said that it had thundered. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him."
Jesus answered, "This voice came for your sake, not mine.
Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out.
And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself."
He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die.
The crowd answered him, "We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?"
So Jesus said to them, "The light is among you a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, so that darkness does not overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.
While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become sons of light." After Jesus had said these things, he went away and hid from them.
Though he had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in him,
so that the word of the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "Lord, who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"
For this reason they could not believe, because Isaiah said again:
"He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they would not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them."
Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke about him.
Yet even so, many even of the rulers believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they would not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue;
for they loved human glory more than the glory of God.
Then Jesus cried out, "Whoever believes in me does not believe in me but in him who sent me,
and whoever sees me sees him who sent me.
I have come into the world as light, so that no one who believes in me should remain in darkness.
And if anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.
Whoever rejects me and does not receive my words already has a judge: the very word I have spoken will judge him on the last day.
For I have not spoken on my own authority; the Father who sent me has himself commanded me what to say and what to speak.
And I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I speak, I speak just as the Father has told me."
