Return from exile

Jedaiah was among the priests who returned from the Babylonian exile to Jerusalem together with Zerubbabel and Joshua.

36The priests: the sons of Jedaiah, of the house of Jeshua, 973;

Listed in the priestly register

Jedaiah and his descendants were registered among the priestly families that could prove their genealogy and thus serve in the temple.

39The priests: the descendants of Jedaiah, of the house of Jeshua, 973;

Service in the temple

Jedaiah's family was assigned to the first of the 24 priestly divisions that served in the temple in Jerusalem.

7The first lot fell to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah,

Mentioned in Nehemiah's list of priests

Jedaja is mentioned among the priests and Levites who returned with Zerubbabel in Nehemiah's record of returning families.

Symbolic coronation prophesied by Zechariah

The prophet Zechariah mentions Jedaja in connection with a symbolic act where crowns were made and placed as a memorial in the Lord's temple.

10"Take a gift from the exiles — from Heldai, Tobijah, and Jedaiah, who have arrived from Babylon. Go that same day to the house of Josiah son of Zephaniah.
14The crown will be a memorial in the temple of the LORD for Heldai, Tobijah, Jedaiah, and Hen son of Zephaniah.[^1] [^1]: Hebrew reads *Helem* here, understood as a variant of *Heldai* (verse 10); likewise *Hen* ("favor") may be another name for Josiah son of Zephaniah.
