John (son of Mattathias)
Maccabean warrior and eldest son of Mattathias
John was the eldest son of the priest Mattathias and brother to Judas Maccabeus. He participated in the Jewish revolt against the Seleucid Empire and fought for religious freedom. John was killed by the sons of Jambris, a Nabataean tribe, during a mission.
