Barzillai Supports David During the Flight

Barzillai from Gilead was among those who brought supplies to David and his people as they fled from Absalom. This act of kindness laid the foundation for David's gratitude toward Barzillai's family.

27When David came to Mahanaim, Shobi son of Nahash from Rabbah of the Ammonites, Machir son of Ammiel from Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite from Rogelim
28brought bedding, bowls, and pottery, along with wheat, barley, flour, roasted grain, beans, lentils,

29honey, curds, sheep, and cheese from the herd. They set it before David and the people with him to eat, for they said, "The people have grown hungry, weary, and thirsty in the wilderness."

David Invites Barzillai to Jerusalem

After Absalom's rebellion was crushed, David wanted to reward Barzillai by inviting him to come to Jerusalem and be supported there. Barzillai declined due to his advanced age.

31And Mephibosheth said to the king, "Let him take it all, now that my lord the king has come home in peace."
32Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim and crossed the Jordan with the king, to escort him across the river.
33Barzillai was very old, eighty years of age. He had provided the king with food during his stay at Mahanaim, for he was a very wealthy man.
34The king said to Barzillai, "Cross over with me, and I will provide for you at my side in Jerusalem."
35But Barzillai answered the king, "How many years of life are left to me, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem?
36I am eighty years old today. Can I still tell good from bad? Can your servant taste what he eats or drinks? Can I still hear the voices of men and women singing? Why should your servant be one more burden to my lord the king?
37Your servant will only cross the Jordan with the king a little way. Why should the king reward me like this?

Kimham Sent with David in His Father's Place

Barzillai asked David to take Kimham instead of himself. David agreed and promised to do for Kimham whatever Barzillai desired.

37Your servant will only cross the Jordan with the king a little way. Why should the king reward me like this?
38Please let your servant turn back, so that I may die in my own town, near the grave of my father and mother. But here is your servant Kimham; let him cross over with my lord the king, and do for him whatever seems good to you."
39The king said, "Kimham shall cross over with me, and I will do for him whatever seems good to you; and anything you ask of me I will do for you."
40So all the people crossed the Jordan, and the king crossed too. Then the king kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and Barzillai returned home.

David's Final Wish Regarding Barzillai's Sons

On his deathbed, David instructed Solomon to show kindness to the sons of Barzillai and let them eat at the king's table, in gratitude for how Barzillai had helped him while he fled from Absalom.

7But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be among those who eat at your table, for they stood by me when I fled from your brother Absalom.

Kimham's lodging near Bethlehem

The prophet Jeremiah mentions a lodging (Gerut Kimham) near Bethlehem that bore Kimham's name, suggesting that David had given Kimham land holdings in this area.

17They set out and stayed at Geruth Chimham near Bethlehem, on their way to Egypt,
