In the seventh month Ishmael son of Nethaniah, son of Elishama, who was of royal descent and one of the king's chief officers, came with ten men to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah. While they were eating together there at Mizpah,

Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the ten men with him rose up and struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, with the sword, killing the man whom the king of Babylon had appointed over the land.

Ishmael also killed all the Judeans who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans who were found there, the fighting men.

On the second day after the murder of Gedaliah, before anyone knew of it,

eighty men came from Shechem, Shiloh, and Samaria, their beards shaved, their clothes torn, and their bodies gashed, carrying grain offerings and frankincense to bring to the house of the LORD.

Ishmael son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping as he went. When he met them, he said, "Come to Gedaliah son of Ahikam."

But when they had come into the city, Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the men with him slaughtered them and threw them into a cistern.

Ten of them, however, said to Ishmael, "Do not kill us, for we have hidden stores of wheat, barley, oil, and honey in the fields." So he held back and did not kill them with the others.

The cistern where Ishmael threw all the bodies of the men he had struck down along with Gedaliah was the one King Asa had made as a defense against Baasha king of Israel; Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled it with the slain.

Then Ishmael took captive all the rest of the people at Mizpah—the king's daughters and all the people who were left there, whom Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard, had entrusted to Gedaliah son of Ahikam. Ishmael son of Nethaniah took them captive and set out to cross over to the Ammonites.

When Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces with him heard of all the evil that Ishmael son of Nethaniah had done,

they took all their men and went to fight Ishmael son of Nethaniah. They caught up with him at the great pool in Gibeon.

When all the people with Ishmael saw Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces with him, they were overjoyed.

All the people Ishmael had taken captive from Mizpah turned about and went over to Johanan son of Kareah.

But Ishmael son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with eight men and fled to the Ammonites.

Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces with him took charge of all the remnant of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael son of Nethaniah at Mizpah after Ishmael had killed Gedaliah son of Ahikam—soldiers, women, children, and court officials whom he brought back from Gibeon.

They set out and stayed at Geruth Chimham near Bethlehem, on their way to Egypt,

to escape the Chaldeans; for they were afraid of them, because Ishmael son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed over the land.

People

Ishmael son of Nethaniah was of royal lineage (מִזֶּרַע הַמְּלוּכָה), which gave him legitimacy to challenge Gedaliah’s authority. As a descendant of the house of David, he may have viewed himself as the rightful leader of Judah rather than accepting a governor appointed by Babylon. He came to Mizpah accompanied by ten other men and the king’s officials (וְרַבֵּי הַמֶּלֶךְ).

Gedaliah son of Ahikam son of Shaphan came from a prominent family of scribes and officials. His grandfather Shaphan served as a scribe under King Josiah (2 Kings 22:3), and the family was known for supporting Jeremiah (Jeremiah 26:24). Gedaliah’s name, meaning "YHWH is great," appears on a seal from Lachish with the inscription "Belonging to Gedaliah, who is over the house"—possibly referring to this same person.

Johanan son of Kareah was one of the military commanders who had warned Gedaliah about Ishmael (Jeremiah 40:13–16). His name means "YHWH is gracious," and he emerges as the most decisive among the remaining military leaders.

Places

Mizpah (הַמִּצְפָּה) was a city in Benjamin, identified with Tell en-Nasbeh, about 12 kilometers north of Jerusalem. Archaeological excavations have revealed a massive city wall and gate from the Iron Age. After the destruction of Jerusalem, Mizpah became the administrative center for the Babylonian province of Judah, likely because it had not been destroyed in 586 BCE.

Shechem, Shiloh, and Samaria were cities in the former northern kingdom of Israel. The fact that pilgrims traveled from these places to the temple in Jerusalem shows that Yahwists in the north still regarded Jerusalem as their religious center, even after Assyrian deportations 130 years earlier. Shiloh itself had once been an important cultic site before its destruction (Jeremiah 7:12–14).

Gibeon, with its "great waters" (מַיִם רַבִּים), was a city about 9 kilometers northwest of Jerusalem. The famous water pool has been archaeologically identified as a large, carved cistern (11 meters in diameter and 10 meters deep). This site had also previously been the scene of armed conflict (2 Samuel 2:13–17).

Events and Customs

Mourning rituals are described in verse 5: The eighty men had shaved their beards, torn their clothes, and cut themselves (מְגֻלְּחֵי זָקָן וּקְרֻעֵי בְגָדִים וּמִתְגֹּדְדִים). These were signs of deep grief, likely over the destruction of the temple. Although self-harm was forbidden by the law (Leviticus 19:28; Deuteronomy 14:1), such practices were widespread in folk religion and surrounding cultures.

Violation of meal hospitality was a serious breach of ancient Near Eastern honor codes. That Ishmael ate bread with Gedaliah (verse 1) and then killed him constituted a grave violation of the sacred bonds of hospitality. This kind of betrayal was considered especially abhorrent throughout the Middle East.

The cistern from King Asa’s time (verse 9) had originally been built as part of Asa’s fortification of Mizpah against Baasha of Israel (1 Kings 15:22). That this defensive structure was now used as a mass grave underscores the tragic irony of the situation.

The title "over the house" was the highest administrative position in the kingdom of Judah. Although the identification is not certain, this discovery supports that Gedaliah was a historical figure of high rank.

The Tell en-Nasbeh excavations (1926–1935) uncovered a city with continuous settlement through the Babylonian period, unlike many other cities in Judah that were destroyed. This confirms that Mizpah was a natural choice as an administrative center after 586 BCE. Archaeologists also found several seals and bullae from this period attesting to ongoing administrative activity.
