Mary of Bethany
The Worshiping Disciple
Mary of Bethany was the sister of Martha and Lazarus. She is known for sitting at Jesus' feet and listening to his words, and for anointing his feet with expensive nard oil. Jesus defended her both against Martha and against critics, saying that what she had done would be told everywhere.

καὶ τῇδε ἦν ἀδελφὴ καλουμένη ⸀Μαριάμ, ἣ καὶ ⸂παρακαθεσθεῖσα πρὸς⸃ τοὺς πόδας τοῦ ⸀Ἰησοῦ ἤκουεν τὸν λόγον αὐτοῦ.
41The Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things,
ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῇ ὁ ⸀κύριος· Μάρθα Μάρθα, μεριμνᾷς καὶ ⸀θορυβάζῃ περὶ πολλά,
42but few things are needed—indeed, only one. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her."
⸂ὀλίγων δέ ἐστιν χρεία ἢ ἑνός⸃· ⸂Μαριὰμ γὰρ⸃ τὴν ἀγαθὴν μερίδα ἐξελέξατο ἥτις οὐκ ἀφαιρεθήσεται ⸀αὐτῆς.
At Lazarus' Death
Mary fell down before Jesus and wept, and Jesus was deeply moved.
28When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary aside, saying, "The Teacher is here and is asking for you."
Καὶ ⸀τοῦτο εἰποῦσα ἀπῆλθεν καὶ ἐφώνησεν ⸀Μαριὰμ τὴν ἀδελφὴν αὐτῆς λάθρᾳ εἰποῦσα· Ὁ διδάσκαλος πάρεστιν καὶ φωνεῖ σε.
29As soon as Mary heard it, she got up quickly and went to him.
ἐκείνη ⸀δὲ ὡς ἤκουσεν ⸀ἠγέρθη ταχὺ καὶ ⸀ἤρχετο πρὸς αὐτόν·
31The Jews who were with her in the house consoling her saw how quickly she got up and went out, and they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to weep there.
οἱ οὖν Ἰουδαῖοι οἱ ὄντες μετʼ αὐτῆς ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ καὶ παραμυθούμενοι αὐτήν, ἰδόντες τὴν ⸀Μαριὰμ ὅτι ταχέως ἀνέστη καὶ ἐξῆλθεν, ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῇ ⸀δόξαντες ὅτι ὑπάγει εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον ἵνα κλαύσῃ ἐκεῖ.
32When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."
ἡ οὖν ⸀Μαριὰμ ὡς ἦλθεν ὅπου ⸀ἦν Ἰησοῦς ἰδοῦσα αὐτὸν ἔπεσεν αὐτοῦ ⸀πρὸς τοὺς πόδας, λέγουσα αὐτῷ· Κύριε, εἰ ἦς ὧδε οὐκ ἄν ⸂μου ἀπέθανεν⸃ ὁ ἀδελφός.
33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.
Ἰησοῦς οὖν ὡς εἶδεν αὐτὴν κλαίουσαν καὶ τοὺς συνελθόντας αὐτῇ Ἰουδαίους κλαίοντας ἐνεβριμήσατο τῷ πνεύματι καὶ ἐτάραξεν ἑαυτόν,
The Anointing in Bethany
Mary anointed Jesus' feet with costly nard and wiped them with her hair.
3Then Mary took a pound of costly perfume, pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
ἡ οὖν ⸀Μαριὰμ λαβοῦσα λίτραν μύρου νάρδου πιστικῆς πολυτίμου ἤλειψεν τοὺς πόδας τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ ἐξέμαξεν ταῖς θριξὶν αὐτῆς τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ· ἡ δὲ οἰκία ἐπληρώθη ἐκ τῆς ὀσμῆς τοῦ μύρου.
4But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, the one who was about to betray him, said,
λέγει ⸀δὲ ⸂Ἰούδας ὁ Ἰσκαριώτης εἷς τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ⸃, ὁ μέλλων αὐτὸν παραδιδόναι·
5"Why wasn't this perfume sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?"
Διὰ τί τοῦτο τὸ μύρον οὐκ ἐπράθη τριακοσίων δηναρίων καὶ ἐδόθη πτωχοῖς;
7So Jesus said, "Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial.
εἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ἄφες αὐτήν, ⸀ἵνα εἰς τὴν ἡμέραν τοῦ ἐνταφιασμοῦ μου ⸀τηρήσῃ αὐτό·
8The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me."
τοὺς πτωχοὺς γὰρ πάντοτε ἔχετε μεθʼ ἑαυτῶν, ἐμὲ δὲ οὐ πάντοτε ἔχετε.
12When she poured this perfume on my body, she was preparing me for burial.
βαλοῦσα γὰρ αὕτη τὸ μύρον τοῦτο ἐπὶ τοῦ σώματός μου πρὸς τὸ ἐνταφιάσαι με ἐποίησεν.
13Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in all the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."
ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ὅπου ἐὰν κηρυχθῇ τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦτο ἐν ὅλῳ τῷ κόσμῳ, λαληθήσεται καὶ ὃ ἐποίησεν αὕτη εἰς μνημόσυνον αὐτῆς.
