Inicio Personas Pontius Pilate Pontius Pilate was the Roman governor of Judea from 26–36 AD. He is known from the Gospels as the judge who sentenced Jesus to crucifixion, even though he found him innocent. He washed his hands and declared himself free from guilt, but yielded to the crowd's demands.

1 When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. gr Πρωΐας δὲ γενομένης συμβούλιον ἔλαβον πάντες οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι τοῦ λαοῦ κατὰ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ὥστε θανατῶσαι αὐτόν·
2 They bound him, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate the governor. gr καὶ δήσαντες αὐτὸν ἀπήγαγον καὶ ⸀παρέδωκαν Πιλάτῳ τῷ ἡγεμόνι.
11 Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned him: "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus said, "You have said so." gr Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ⸀ἐστάθη ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ ἡγεμόνος· καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν ὁ ἡγεμὼν λέγων· Σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων; ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ⸀ἔφη· Σὺ λέγεις.
Pilate questioned Jesus and found no guilt in him. He tried to release him, but the people shouted for Barabbas.
38 "What is truth?" Pilate said. With that he went back out to the Jews and told them, "I find no basis for a charge against him. gr λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Πιλᾶτος· Τί ἐστιν ἀλήθεια; Καὶ τοῦτο εἰπὼν πάλιν ἐξῆλθεν πρὸς τοὺς Ἰουδαίους, καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· Ἐγὼ οὐδεμίαν ⸂εὑρίσκω ἐν αὐτῷ αἰτίαν⸃·
4 Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, "I find no guilt in this man." gr ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος εἶπεν πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τοὺς ὄχλους· Οὐδὲν εὑρίσκω αἴτιον ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ.
14 and said to them, "You brought me this man as one who was misleading the people. I examined him in your presence and found no basis for your charges against him. gr εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· Προσηνέγκατέ μοι τὸν ἄνθρωπον τοῦτον ὡς ἀποστρέφοντα τὸν λαόν, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν ἀνακρίνας ⸀οὐθὲν εὗρον ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ αἴτιον ὧν κατηγορεῖτε κατʼ αὐτοῦ.
22 A third time he said to them, "Why? What evil has this man done? I have found in him no guilt deserving death. So I will have him flogged and release him." gr ὁ δὲ τρίτον εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· Τί γὰρ κακὸν ἐποίησεν οὗτος; οὐδὲν αἴτιον θανάτου εὗρον ἐν αὐτῷ· παιδεύσας οὖν αὐτὸν ἀπολύσω.
Pilate's wife sent word that he should have nothing to do with 'this righteous man' - she had had a bad dream.
19 While he was seated on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him: "Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for today I have suffered much in a dream because of him." gr Καθημένου δὲ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τοῦ βήματος ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς αὐτὸν ἡ γυνὴ αὐτοῦ λέγουσα· Μηδὲν σοὶ καὶ τῷ δικαίῳ ἐκείνῳ, πολλὰ γὰρ ἔπαθον σήμερον κατʼ ὄναρ διʼ αὐτόν.
Pilate washed his hands before the crowd and said, "I am innocent of this man's blood." The people took the blame.
24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that a riot was breaking out instead, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this man's blood. See to it yourselves." gr Ἰδὼν δὲ ὁ Πιλᾶτος ὅτι οὐδὲν ὠφελεῖ ἀλλὰ μᾶλλον θόρυβος γίνεται λαβὼν ὕδωρ ἀπενίψατο τὰς χεῖρας ⸀ἀπέναντι τοῦ ὄχλου λέγων· Ἀθῷός εἰμι ἀπὸ τοῦ ⸀αἵματος τούτου· ὑμεῖς ὄψεσθε.
25 And all the people answered, "His blood be on us and on our children!" gr καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς πᾶς ὁ λαὸς εἶπεν· Τὸ αἷμα αὐτοῦ ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ τέκνα ἡμῶν.
Pilate gave in to the pressure, had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. He wrote the inscription: "King of the Jews."
26 Then he released Barabbas to them, and after having Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified. gr τότε ἀπέλυσεν αὐτοῖς τὸν Βαραββᾶν, τὸν δὲ Ἰησοῦν φραγελλώσας παρέδωκεν ἵνα σταυρωθῇ.
19 Pilate also had a notice written and fastened to the cross. It read: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. gr ἔγραψεν δὲ καὶ τίτλον ὁ Πιλᾶτος καὶ ἔθηκεν ἐπὶ τοῦ σταυροῦ· ἦν δὲ γεγραμμένον· Ἰησοῦς ὁ Ναζωραῖος ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων.
22 Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written." gr ἀπεκρίθη ὁ Πιλᾶτος· Ὃ γέγραφα γέγραφα.
