Judas kisses Jesus. Peter cuts off the ear of the high priest's servant.

47While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, and with him a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people.

48The betrayer had given them a sign: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him."

49He went straight up to Jesus and said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him.

50Jesus said to him, "Friend, do what you came for." Then they came forward, laid hands on Jesus, and arrested him.

51Suddenly one of those with Jesus reached out, drew his sword, and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his ear.

52Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back in its place, for all who take up the sword will perish by the sword.

53Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he would at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?

54But then how would the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say it must happen this way?"

55At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to capture me as though I were a robber? Day after day I sat teaching in the temple, and you did not arrest me.

56But all this has happened so that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

44Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man. Arrest him and lead him away under guard."

47But one of those standing nearby drew his sword and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his ear.

48Jesus said to them, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to capture me, as though I were a bandit?

49Day after day I was with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled."

50Then everyone deserted him and fled.

51A young man, wearing nothing but a linen cloth, was following him. When they seized him,

52he left the cloth behind and fled naked.

47While he was still speaking, a crowd arrived, and the man called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He came up to Jesus to kiss him,

48but Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"

49When those around him saw what was coming, they said, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?"

50And one of them struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear.

51But Jesus answered, "Stop! No more of this." And he touched the man's ear and healed him.

52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the temple officers, and the elders who had come against him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs, as if I were a bandit?

53Day after day I was with you in the temple, and you never laid a hand on me. But this is your hour — and the power of darkness."

2Judas, who was betraying him, also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.

3So Judas came there with a detachment of soldiers and with officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, carrying lanterns, torches, and weapons.

4Jesus, knowing everything that was coming upon him, went out and asked them, "Who are you looking for?"

5"Jesus of Nazareth," they answered. Jesus said to them, "I am he." Judas, who was betraying him, was standing there with them.

6When he said, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground.

7So he asked them again, "Who are you looking for?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth."

8Jesus answered, "I told you that I am he. So if you are looking for me, let these men go."

9This was to fulfill the word he had spoken: "Of those you gave me, I have not lost one."

10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.

11So Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword back in its sheath. Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?"

12Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officers arrested Jesus and bound him.

Jesus prays in Gethsemane. Luke mentions the angel who strengthens him and his sweat like blood.

MateoMatt 26:36-46

36Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to the disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."

37He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him, and he began to be grieved and distressed.

38Then he said to them, "My soul is crushed with sorrow, to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me."

39Going a little farther, he fell on his face and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."

40Then he came back to the disciples and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, "So you could not keep watch with me for even one hour?

41Keep watch and pray that you may not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."

42Again, a second time, he went away and prayed, "My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done."

43And he came back again and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.

44So he left them and went away again and prayed a third time, saying the same words.

45Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

46Get up, let us go. Look, my betrayer is here."

32They came to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray."

33He took Peter, James, and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled.

34He said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow, to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch."

35Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.

36"Abba, Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I want, but what you want."

37Then he came back and found them sleeping. "Simon," he said to Peter, "are you asleep? Couldn't you keep watch for one hour?

38Watch and pray that you may not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."

39Again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.

40When he came back, he found them sleeping again, because their eyes were heavy. And they did not know what to say to him.

41He came a third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

42Get up, let us go. See, my betrayer is here."

39Then he went out and made his way, as usual, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him.

40When he came to the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation."

41Then he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and prayed,

42"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me. Yet not my will, but yours be done."

43An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.

44And in his anguish he prayed still more earnestly, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.

45When he rose from prayer and came to the disciples, he found them asleep, worn out by grief.

46"Why are you sleeping?" he said to them. "Get up and pray, so that you will not fall into temptation."

MateoMatthew 26:57-68

57Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered.

58Peter followed him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest. He went inside and sat down with the guards to see how it would end.

59Meanwhile the chief priests and the whole council were looking for false testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death,

60but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward

61and said, "This man said, 'I can tear down the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.'"

62The high priest stood up and said to him, "Have you no answer? What is this testimony they bring against you?"

63But Jesus remained silent. So the high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God."

64Jesus said to him, "You have said it. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven."

65Then the high priest tore his robes and said, "He has blasphemed! Why do we need any more witnesses? You have just heard the blasphemy.

66What is your verdict?" They answered, "He deserves death."

67Then they spat in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him

68and said, "Prophesy to us, Messiah! Who hit you?"

53They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes assembled.

54Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards, warming himself at the fire.

55The chief priests and the whole council were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they found none.

56Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.

57Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him:

58"We heard him say, 'I will destroy this temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.'"

59Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

60Then the high priest stood up before them and questioned Jesus: "Have you no answer? What is this testimony these men bring against you?"

61But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest questioned him: "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?"

62"I am," said Jesus, "and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven."

63At this the high priest tore his garments and said, "Why do we need any more witnesses?

64You have heard the blasphemy. What is your judgment?" And they all condemned him as deserving death.

65Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, "Prophesy!" And the guards beat him.

54They seized him, led him away, and brought him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance.

55When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them.

56A servant girl saw him sitting there in the firelight, looked closely at him, and said, "This man was with him too."

57But he denied it: "Woman, I don't know him."

58A little later someone else saw him and said, "You are one of them too." "Man, I am not," Peter said.

59About an hour later another insisted, "This man certainly was with him — after all, he is a Galilean."

60But Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about." At that very moment, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.

61The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times."

62And he went outside and wept bitterly.

63The men holding Jesus mocked him and beat him.

64They blindfolded him and kept demanding, "Prophesy! Who hit you?"

65And they hurled many other insults at him.

66At daybreak the council of the elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they brought him before their Sanhedrin.

67"If you are the Messiah," they said, "tell us." He answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me;

68and if I ask you a question, you will not answer.

69But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God."

70They all said, "Are you then the Son of God?" He answered, "You say that I am."

71Then they said, "Why do we need any further testimony? We have heard it from his own lips."

13They brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.

14Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was better for one man to die for the people.

15Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest's courtyard,

16but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the woman at the door, and brought Peter in.

17The servant girl at the door said to Peter, "You aren't one of this man's disciples too, are you?" "I am not," he said.

18The servants and officers were standing there, warming themselves at a charcoal fire they had made, because it was cold. Peter was standing with them, warming himself as well.

19Then the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.

20Jesus answered him, "I have spoken openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.

21Why do you question me? Question those who heard what I said to them. Look, these men know what I said.

22When he said this, one of the officers standing nearby struck Jesus in the face and said, "Is that how you answer the high priest?"

23Jesus replied, "If I said something wrong, testify to what was wrong. But if I spoke rightly, why do you strike me?"

24Then Annas sent him, still bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.

Peter's DenialMMLJ

Peter denies Jesus three times before the rooster crows.

MateoMatthew 26:69-75

69Meanwhile Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant girl came up to him and said, "You too were with Jesus of Galilee."

70But he denied it in front of them all: "I don't know what you're talking about."

71When he went out to the gateway, another woman saw him and said to those standing there, "This man was with Jesus of Nazareth."

72Again he denied it with an oath: "I do not know the man."

73A little later those standing there came up to Peter and said, "You really are one of them; your accent gives you away."

74Then he began to curse and swear, "I do not know the man!" And immediately a rooster crowed.

75Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly.

MarcosMark 14:66-72

66While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the high priest's servant girls came by.

67When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him and said, "You also were with Jesus, the Nazarene."

68But he denied it. "I don't know what you're talking about—I don't understand." And he went out into the entryway. Then a rooster crowed.

69When the servant girl saw him there, she began again to say to those standing around, "This man is one of them."

70Again he denied it. After a little while, those standing nearby said to Peter, "You certainly are one of them, for you are a Galilean, and your accent sounds just like theirs."

71Then he began to curse and swear, "I do not know this man you are talking about!"

72Immediately the rooster crowed a second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times." And he broke down and wept.
