Mentioned in Ephraim's Genealogy

Refah is mentioned as a descendant of Ephraim through Beriah in the genealogical record of 1 Chronicles.

25Rephah was his son, and Resheph; Telah his son, Tahan his son,

Part of the Ephraimite Lineage

Refah is placed in the lineage that connects Ephraim with later leaders, including Joshua (son of Nun).

25Rephah was his son, and Resheph; Telah his son, Tahan his son,
26Ladan his son, Ammihud his son, Elishama his son,
27Nun his son, Joshua his son.

Origin of the Tribe of Ephraim

Ephraim, the patriarch of Rephah's lineage, was blessed by Jacob as the foremost of Joseph's two sons.

17When Joseph saw that his father was placing his right hand on Ephraim's head, he was displeased; so he took hold of his father's hand to move it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's.
18Joseph said to his father, "Not that way, my father. This one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head."
19But his father refused and said, "I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will be great. Yet his younger brother will be greater than he, and his descendants will become a multitude of nations."
20So he blessed them that day, saying: "By you Israel will pronounce this blessing: 'May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.'" And so he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.

The descendants of Beriah after the disaster

Beriah, Rephah's father, was born during a time of mourning after some of Ephraim's sons were killed by men from Gath.

20The descendants of Ephraim: Shuthelah, Bered his son, Tahath his son, Eleadah his son, Tahath his son,
21Zabad his son, Shuthelah his son, and also Ezer and Elead, whom the men of Gath, born in that land, killed, for they had gone down to seize their livestock.
22Their father Ephraim mourned for many days, and his brothers came to comfort him.
23Then he went in to his wife, and she conceived and bore a son. He named him Beriah,* because disaster had struck his house. [*Footnote: The name Beriah sounds like the Hebrew phrase meaning "in misfortune."]
