Cyrus hands over the temple vessels to Sheshbazzar

The Persian king Cyrus ordered that the gold and silver vessels taken by Nebuchadnezzar from the temple in Jerusalem be handed over to Sheshbazzar, prince of Judah, to be brought back.

7King Cyrus also brought out the articles of the house of the LORD that Nebuchadnezzar had carried off from Jerusalem and placed in the temple of his own god.
8Cyrus king of Persia had them brought out by Mithredath the treasurer, who counted them out to Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah.
11In all there were five thousand four hundred articles of gold and silver. Sheshbazzar brought all of these up with the exiles when they came from Babylon to Jerusalem.

14Moreover, the gold and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to the temple in Babylon—these King Cyrus took out of the temple in Babylon and handed over to a man named Sheshbazzar, whom he had appointed governor.

Appointed as Governor

Sheshbazzar was appointed by Cyrus as governor (tirsata/pechah) over the province of Judah, with a mandate to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem.

15He said to him, "Take these vessels, go and deposit them in the temple in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be rebuilt on its site."

Return of the Temple Vessels to Jerusalem

Sheshbazzar led the transport of the sacred vessels from Babylon back to Jerusalem, symbolizing the restoration of Jewish worship.

11In all there were five thousand four hundred articles of gold and silver. Sheshbazzar brought all of these up with the exiles when they came from Babylon to Jerusalem.
15He said to him, "Take these vessels, go and deposit them in the temple in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be rebuilt on its site."

The foundation of the new temple is laid

Sheshbazzar laid the foundation of God's house in Jerusalem, thus starting the great rebuilding project that was later completed under Zerubbabel.

16So this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of the house of God in Jerusalem, and from that time until now it has been under construction, and it is not yet finished."

Report to King Darius about the construction work

When opponents tried to stop the temple building, a letter to King Darius referred to Sheshbazzar's original work on the foundation as proof that the construction project had been legally authorized by Cyrus.

13Yet in the first year of Cyrus, king of Babylon, King Cyrus issued a decree that this house of God be rebuilt.
15He said to him, "Take these vessels, go and deposit them in the temple in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be rebuilt on its site."
16So this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of the house of God in Jerusalem, and from that time until now it has been under construction, and it is not yet finished."
17Now then, if it pleases the king, let a search be made in the royal archives there in Babylon, to see whether a decree was in fact issued by King Cyrus for the rebuilding of this house of God in Jerusalem. And let the king send us his decision in this matter.
