The Messianic Branch
También conocido como: Semak, Tsemach, Branch, Zemach
Branch (Hebrew: Tsemach) is a prophetic name and a messianic title used in the Old Testament to describe the coming Savior King from David's lineage. The prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Zechariah use this image of a righteous ruler who will grow up as a shoot from Jesse's stump. In Christian tradition, Branch is understood as a prophecy about Jesus Christ.

The Branch from Jesse's Stump
Isaiah prophesies that a shoot will spring up from Jesse's stump, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit. The Lord's Spirit will rest upon him.
1A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a branch will bear fruit.
וְיָצָ֥א חֹ֖טֶר מִגֵּ֣זַע יִשָׁ֑י וְנֵ֖צֶר מִשָּׁרָשָׁ֥יו יִפְרֶֽה׃
2The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
וְנָחָ֥ה עָלָ֖יו ר֣וּחַ יְהוָ֑ה ר֧וּחַ חָכְמָ֣ה וּבִינָ֗ה ר֤וּחַ עֵצָה֙ וּגְבוּרָ֔ה ר֥וּחַ דַּ֖עַת וְיִרְאַ֥ת יְהוָֽה׃
3His delight will be in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what his eyes see, nor decide by what his ears hear.
וַהֲרִיח֖וֹ בְּיִרְאַ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה וְלֹֽא־לְמַרְאֵ֤ה עֵינָיו֙ יִשְׁפּ֔וֹט וְלֹֽא־לְמִשְׁמַ֥ע אָזְנָ֖יו יוֹכִֽיחַ׃
4With righteousness he will judge the poor, and with justice he will decide for the lowly of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.
וְשָׁפַ֤ט בְּצֶ֙דֶק֙ דַּלִּ֔ים וְהוֹכִ֥יחַ בְּמִישׁ֖וֹר לְעַנְוֵי־אָ֑רֶץ וְהִֽכָּה־אֶ֙רֶץ֙ בְּשֵׁ֣בֶט פִּ֔יו וּבְר֥וּחַ שְׂפָתָ֖יו יָמִ֥ית רָשָֽׁע׃
5Righteousness will be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the sash around his hips.
וְהָ֥יָה צֶ֖דֶק אֵז֣וֹר מָתְנָ֑יו וְהָאֱמוּנָ֖ה אֵז֥וֹר חֲלָצָֽיו׃
The Lord's Branch for Glory and Honor
Isaiah speaks of the Lord's Branch becoming a source of beauty and honor for the survivors in Israel.
2On that day the Branch of the LORD will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land will be the pride and splendor of those in Israel who survive.
בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא יִֽהְיֶה֙ צֶ֣מַח יְהוָ֔ה לִצְבִ֖י וּלְכָב֑וֹד וּפְרִ֤י הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ לְגָא֣וֹן וּלְתִפְאֶ֔רֶת לִפְלֵיטַ֖ת יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
Jeremiah prophesies about a righteous Branch
Jeremiah proclaims that the Lord will raise up a righteous Branch for David, a king who shall reign with wisdom and do what is right and just in the land.
5Look, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch. He will reign as king and act wisely, and he will do what is just and right in the land.
הִנֵּ֨ה יָמִ֤ים בָּאִים֙ נְאֻם־יְהוָ֔ה וַהֲקִמֹתִ֥י לְדָוִ֖ד צֶ֣מַח צַדִּ֑יק וּמָ֤לַךְ מֶ֙לֶךְ֙ וְהִשְׂכִּ֔יל וְעָשָׂ֛ה מִשְׁפָּ֥ט וּצְדָקָ֖ה בָּאָֽרֶץ׃
6In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.
בְּיָמָיו֙ תִּוָּשַׁ֣ע יְהוּדָ֔ה וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל יִשְׁכֹּ֣ן לָבֶ֑טַח וְזֶה־שְּׁמ֥וֹ אֲֽשֶׁר־יִקְרְא֖וֹ יְהוָ֥ה ׀ צִדְקֵֽנוּ׃ ס
15In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David's line; he will do what is just and right in the land.
בַּיָּמִ֤ים הָהֵם֙ וּבָעֵ֣ת הַהִ֔יא אַצְמִ֥יחַ לְדָוִ֖ד צֶ֣מַח צְדָקָ֑ה וְעָשָׂ֛ה מִשְׁפָּ֥ט וּצְדָקָ֖ה בָּאָֽרֶץ׃
16In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.
בַּיָּמִ֤ים הָהֵם֙ תִּוָּשַׁ֣ע יְהוּדָ֔ה וִירוּשָׁלַ֖͏ִם תִּשְׁכּ֣וֹן לָבֶ֑טַח וְזֶ֥ה אֲשֶׁר־יִקְרָא־לָ֖הּ יְהוָ֥ה ׀ צִדְקֵֽנוּ׃ ס
Zechariah presents the Branch as the Lord's servant
The Lord reveals through the prophet Zechariah that he will send his servant the Branch, and that he will build the temple of the Lord.
8Listen now, Joshua the high priest, you and your companions seated before you—for they are men who serve as a sign: I am going to bring my servant, the Branch.
שְֽׁמַֽע־נָ֞א יְהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ ׀ הַכֹּהֵ֣ן הַגָּד֗וֹל אַתָּה֙ וְרֵעֶ֙יךָ֙ הַיֹּשְׁבִ֣ים לְפָנֶ֔יךָ כִּֽי־אַנְשֵׁ֥י מוֹפֵ֖ת הֵ֑מָּה כִּֽי־הִנְנִ֥י מֵבִ֛יא אֶת־עַבְדִּ֖י צֶֽמַח׃
12Tell him: This is what the LORD of hosts says: Here is a man whose name is Branch; he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the LORD.
וְאָמַרְתָּ֤ אֵלָיו֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר כֹּ֥ה אָמַ֛ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת לֵאמֹ֑ר הִנֵּה־אִ֞ישׁ צֶ֤מַח שְׁמוֹ֙ וּמִתַּחְתָּ֣יו יִצְמָ֔ח וּבָנָ֖ה אֶת־הֵיכַ֥ל יְהוָֽהּ׃
13Yes, he will build the temple of the LORD, and he will bear majesty and sit and rule on his throne. He will be a priest on his throne, and between the two there will be a counsel of peace.
וְ֠הוּא יִבְנֶ֞ה אֶת־הֵיכַ֤ל יְהוָה֙ וְהֽוּא־יִשָּׂ֣א ה֔וֹד וְיָשַׁ֥ב וּמָשַׁ֖ל עַל־כִּסְא֑וֹ וְהָיָ֤ה כֹהֵן֙ עַל־כִּסְא֔וֹ וַעֲצַ֣ת שָׁל֔וֹם תִּהְיֶ֖ה בֵּ֥ין שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃
Fulfillment in Jesus Christ
The New Testament testifies that Jesus of Nazareth, a descendant of David, is the fulfillment of the prophecies about the Branch – he who is both king and priest forever.
5Then one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep. Look: the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals."
καὶ εἷς ἐκ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων λέγει μοι· Μὴ κλαῖε· ἰδοὺ ἐνίκησεν ὁ λέων ὁ ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ἰούδα, ἡ ῥίζα Δαυίδ, ⸀ἀνοῖξαι τὸ βιβλίον καὶ τὰς ἑπτὰ σφραγῖδας αὐτοῦ.
16"I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the bright Morning Star."
Ἐγὼ Ἰησοῦς ἔπεμψα τὸν ἄγγελόν μου μαρτυρῆσαι ὑμῖν ταῦτα ἐπὶ ταῖς ἐκκλησίαις. ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ ῥίζα καὶ τὸ γένος Δαυίδ, ὁ ἀστὴρ ὁ λαμπρός, ὁ πρωϊνός.
The Branch who grew up as a shoot from the roots
Isaiah describes the Lord's suffering servant as a tender shoot from dry ground, without form or majesty, yet who bore our sicknesses and sins.
2He grew up before him like a young shoot, like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty, no majesty to draw our eyes, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
וַיַּ֨עַל כַּיּוֹנֵ֜ק לְפָנָ֗יו וְכַשֹּׁ֙רֶשׁ֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ צִיָּ֔ה לֹא־תֹ֥אַר ל֖וֹ וְלֹ֣א הָדָ֑ר וְנִרְאֵ֥הוּ וְלֹֽא־מַרְאֶ֖ה וְנֶחְמְדֵֽהוּ׃
3He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. Like one from whom people hide their faces, he was despised, and we held him of no account.
נִבְזֶה֙ וַחֲדַ֣ל אִישִׁ֔ים אִ֥ישׁ מַכְאֹב֖וֹת וִיד֣וּעַ חֹ֑לִי וּכְמַסְתֵּ֤ר פָּנִים֙ מִמֶּ֔נּוּ נִבְזֶ֖ה וְלֹ֥א חֲשַׁבְנֻֽהוּ׃
4Yet it was our griefs he bore, our sorrows he carried; but we considered him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.
אָכֵ֤ן חֳלָיֵ֙נוּ֙ ה֣וּא נָשָׂ֔א וּמַכְאֹבֵ֖ינוּ סְבָלָ֑ם וַאֲנַ֣חְנוּ חֲשַׁבְנֻ֔הוּ נָג֛וּעַ מֻכֵּ֥ה אֱלֹהִ֖ים וּמְעֻנֶּֽה׃
5But he was pierced for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought us peace was laid upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
וְהוּא֙ מְחֹלָ֣ל מִפְּשָׁעֵ֔נוּ מְדֻכָּ֖א מֵעֲוֺנֹתֵ֑ינוּ מוּסַ֤ר שְׁלוֹמֵ֙נוּ֙ עָלָ֔יו וּבַחֲבֻרָת֖וֹ נִרְפָּא־לָֽנוּ׃
