Timothy

Paul's spiritual son

La Iglesia primitivaLeaderApostlec. 17–97 AD

Timothy was Paul's closest co-worker and 'a true child in the faith.' He grew up with a Jewish mother and a Greek father, and was taught the Scriptures from childhood by his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois. Paul sent two letters to him that are preserved in the New Testament.

Paul's choice of Timothy

Paul chose the young Timothy as a companion on his second missionary journey. The brothers gave him a good recommendation.

1Paul came also to Derbe and then to Lystra. And there was a disciple named Timothy, the son of a believing Jewish woman, but his father was a Greek.
2The brothers in Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him,
3and Paul wanted to take him along on the journey. So he circumcised him because of the Jews in that region, since they all knew that his father was a Greek.

Sent to Thessalonica

Paul sent Timothy back to Thessalonica to strengthen and encourage the congregation in their trials.

1So when we could bear it no longer, we were willing to be left behind alone in Athens,
2and we sent Timothy, our brother and God's coworker in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen you and encourage you in your faith,
3so that no one would be shaken by these troubles. For you yourselves know that this is what we are appointed to.
6But now Timothy has come to us from you, bringing good news of your faith and love, and reporting that you always remember us kindly and long to see us, just as we long to see you.

Faith from childhood

Paul reminded Timothy of the sincere faith he had received from his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice.

5I am reminded of your sincere faith, which lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am convinced that it lives in you as well.
6That is why I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God that is in you through the laying on of my hands.

A Model for the Young

Paul encouraged Timothy to be a model in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity, despite his young age.

12Let no one look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
14Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given you through prophecy when the elders laid their hands on you.
15Give yourself to these things; immerse yourself in them, so that everyone may see your progress.
16Watch your life and your teaching closely. Persevere in them, for by doing so you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

Preach the Word

Paul gave Timothy the solemn charge to preach the Word in season and out of season.

1I charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:
2preach the word; be ready whether the time is right or not; correct, rebuke, and encourage—with all patience and careful teaching.
5But you—keep a clear head in everything, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry to the full.
