Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,
to Timothy, my true child in the faith: grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
As I urged you when I was on my way to Macedonia, stay on in Ephesus so that you may instruct certain people to stop teaching what is false
and to give up their devotion to myths and endless genealogies. Such things breed speculation rather than serve God's plan, which works by faith.
The aim of this instruction is love that springs from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith.
Some have wandered away from these and turned aside to empty talk,
wanting to be teachers of the law without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make such confident claims.
Now we know that the law is good, if a person uses it properly,
understanding that the law is not laid down for the righteous, but for the lawless and rebellious, the godless and sinful, the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers,
the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality,* slave traders, liars, perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, [*Footnote: The Greek word literally means 'men who lie with males.']
according to the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, which was entrusted to me.
I am grateful to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, because he considered me faithful and appointed me to his service—
me, who was once a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a violent man. Yet I was shown mercy, because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.
And the grace of our Lord overflowed for me, together with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—and I am the foremost of them.
But for this very reason I was shown mercy, so that in me, the foremost of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his perfect patience as an example for those who would come to believe in him and receive eternal life.
To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by them you may fight the good fight,
holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have thrust this conscience aside and made shipwreck of their faith.
Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan, so that they may be taught not to blaspheme.
