Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.
When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard of it—he was in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon—he returned from Egypt.
They sent for him, and Jeroboam came with all Israel and said to Rehoboam:
"Your father made our yoke harsh. Now lighten the hard labor your father imposed and the heavy yoke he laid on us, and we will serve you."
He answered them, "Come back to me in three days." So the people went away.
King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. He asked, "How do you advise me to answer this people?"
They said to him, "If you are good to this people and please them, and speak kindly to them, they will be your servants forever."
But he rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and who were in his service.
He asked them, "What is your advice? How shall we answer this people who have said to me, 'Lighten the yoke your father laid on us'?"
The young men who had grown up with him replied, "This is what you should say to the people who told you, 'Your father made our yoke heavy; now lighten it for us.' Tell them: 'My little finger is thicker than my father's waist.'
Now, my father laid a heavy yoke on you; I will make it heavier still. My father disciplined you with whips; I will use scorpions."
Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king had ordered when he said, "Come back to me on the third day."
The king answered them harshly; King Rehoboam rejected the advice of the elders.
He spoke to them as the young men had advised: "I will make your yoke heavy; I will add to it. My father disciplined you with whips; I will use scorpions."
So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from God, to fulfill the word the LORD had spoken through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.
When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered him: "What share do we have in David? What part in the son of Jesse? To your tents, Israel! Look after your own house, David!" And all Israel went home to their tents.
But Rehoboam ruled over the Israelites living in the towns of Judah.
King Rehoboam sent out Hadoram, who was in charge of forced labor, but the Israelites stoned him to death. King Rehoboam barely managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem.
So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.
