After Ahab's death, Moab rebelled against Israel.

Ahaziah fell through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria and was injured. So he sent messengers with these orders: "Go and inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I will recover from this illness."

But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, "Get up and go to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and ask them: 'Is there no God in Israel, that you are going to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?'

Therefore this is what the LORD says: 'You will not get up from the bed you are lying on. You will surely die.'" So Elijah went.

When the messengers returned to the king, he asked them, "Why have you come back?"

They answered, "A man came up to meet us and said, 'Go back to the king who sent you and tell him: This is what the LORD says: Is there no God in Israel, that you are sending men to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you will not get up from the bed you are lying on. You will surely die.'"

The king asked them, "What did this man look like who came up to meet you and spoke these words to you?"

They replied, "He had a garment of hair and a leather belt around his waist." The king said, "That was Elijah the Tishbite."

Then he sent a captain with his fifty men to Elijah. The captain went up to him, and there he was, sitting on top of the mountain, and he said, "Man of God, the king commands you: Come down!"

Elijah answered the captain, "If I am a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!" Then fire came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty men.

The king sent another captain with his fifty men to him. He said to Elijah, "Man of God, this is what the king says: Come down at once!"

Elijah answered, "If I am a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!" Then the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty men.

So the king sent a third captain with his fifty men. This third captain went up, fell on his knees before Elijah, and pleaded with him: "Man of God, please let my life and the lives of these fifty servants of yours be precious in your sight.

Fire has come down from heaven and consumed the first two captains with all their men. But now let my life be precious in your sight."

The angel of the LORD said to Elijah, "Go down with him; do not be afraid of him." So Elijah got up and went down with him to the king.

He said to the king, "This is what the LORD says: Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron—is there no God in Israel whose word you might seek?—therefore you will not get up from the bed you are lying on. You will surely die."

So he died, according to the word of the LORD that Elijah had spoken. Since he had no son, Joram succeeded him as king in the second year of Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah.

As for all the other things Ahaziah did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel?

People

Ahaziah was the son of Ahab and Jezebel and reigned over the northern kingdom of Israel for a short time (c. 853–852 B.C.). His brief reign was marked by continued idolatry following his parents' pattern. The misfortune in which he fell through the lattice (שְּׂבָכָה, sevakah) in his upper chamber likely refers to a decorative lattice window or a balcony railing in the palace at Samaria. Such architectural elements are confirmed by excavations of Iron Age palace structures in the region. Ahaziah died childless, and his brother Joram succeeded him on the throne.

Elijah the Tishbite appears here in his characteristic prophetic attire—a man with a "hairy garment" (בַּעַל שֵׂעָר, ba'al se'ar) and a leather belt. This clothing became a hallmark of prophets and was later adopted by Elisha and associated with John the Baptist.

Joram (יְהוֹרָם), Ahaziah's brother, is mentioned at the end of the chapter as his successor. He became king because Ahaziah had no son to inherit the throne.
