The Way, the Truth, and the Life. The Vine and the Branches.
Bibelsk grunnlag
Jesus' farewell discourse: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser... Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me" (John 15:1-8). The commandment of love: "Love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:12-13).
Betydning
The vine and the branches is the strongest image of the fellowship between Christ and believers—without connection, there is no fruit. To "abide in" Christ is not a mystical escape from the world but practical love. The commandment to love is not a new law but a consequence of being connected to Him who is love itself.
GT-forbindelser
Israel as God's vineyard in Isaiah 5:1-7—the vineyard that bore no fruit. Psalm 80:9-16 about the vine God planted from Egypt. Hosea 10:1 about Israel as a fruitful vine. Jesus is the "true" vine—the fulfillment of what Israel was meant to be.
Liturgisk kontekst
White color. The theme of the farewell discourse characterizes the Sundays leading up to Ascension—Jesus prepares His disciples for His absence and the coming of the Spirit.
Historie
The vine as an image of God's people is pervasive in Christian art and theology. The Church Fathers (especially Augustine) used the vine metaphor as a key text to explain the necessity of grace and the fruitfulness of faith.
