Abdeel

Father of Shelemiah

Tunnetaan myös nimellä: Abde'el

Jakautunut kuningaskuntaFather of Shelemiahc. 600s BC

Abdeel is a person known exclusively from the book of Jeremiah as the father of Shelemiah. His son was one of three court officials whom King Jehoiakim sent to arrest the prophet Jeremiah and the scribe Baruch after the king, in anger, had burned the scroll containing Jeremiah's prophecies (Jer 36:26). Abdeel himself does not play an active role in the narrative, but the fact that his name is preserved as a patronym suggests that his family likely held an official position at the court in Jerusalem. The event took place during a critical period around 605–604 BC, when the power of the Neo-Babylonian Empire was growing rapidly under Nebuchadnezzar. The name Abdeel means 'servant of God' in Hebrew, a designation that testifies to religious devotion within the naming tradition.

Shelemiah sent to arrest Jeremiah and Baruch

After Jeremiah's prophecies were written on a scroll by the scribe Baruch and read aloud to King Jehoiakim, the king reacted by cutting up the scroll and throwing it into the fire. Then the king ordered Shelemiah, son of Abdeel, along with Jerahmeel and Seraiah, to arrest the prophet Jeremiah and the scribe Baruch. However, the Lord hid both of them so that they could not be found.

23Each time Jehudi finished reading three or four columns, the king would cut them off with a scribe's knife and throw them into the fire in the brazier, until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire.
24Yet neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words was afraid, nor did any of them tear their clothes.
25Even when Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them.
26Instead the king ordered Jerahmeel, a son of the king, Seraiah son of Azriel, and Shelemiah son of Abdeel to arrest Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet. But the LORD had hidden them.
