The Conspiracy Against the King

Bigthan and Teresh, who guarded the doorway, became angry and sought to lay hands on King Ahasuerus. They planned an assassination against the Persian king.

21In those days, while Mordecai was sitting at the king's gate, Bigthan and Teresh, two of the king's eunuchs who guarded the threshold, grew angry and plotted to lay hands on King Ahasuerus.

Mordecai's Revelation

Mordecai learned of the conspiracy and informed Queen Esther, who in turn told the king in Mordecai's name.

22But the plot became known to Mordecai, and he told Queen Esther, and Esther reported it to the king in Mordecai's name.

The Execution

The matter was investigated and found to be true. Both conspirators were hanged on a gallows, and the event was written in the book of chronicles for the king to see.

23The matter was investigated and confirmed, and the two men were hanged on a pole.[^1] [^1]: Or "impaled on a stake"; the Hebrew word means "tree" or "wood."

The Event Remembered in the King's Chronicles

Later, during a sleepless night, King Ahasuerus had the book of chronicles read to him and was reminded how Mordecai had exposed Bigtan and Teresh. This led to Mordecai's elevation.

1That night the king could not sleep, so he ordered the book of records, the chronicles, to be brought and read aloud before him.
2There it was found written how Mordecai had reported that Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's eunuchs who guarded the threshold, had plotted to lay hands on King Ahasuerus.
