Ephrath (also called Ephratah) was the wife of Caleb, son of Hezron, from the tribe of Judah. She is known as the mother of Hur, and through her descendants she became a matriarch to important figures, including Bezalel, who built the tabernacle. The name Ephrath is also associated with the Bethlehem area (Ephratah).

Caleb's marriage to Ephrath

After Hezron died, Caleb took Ephrath as his wife, and she bore him a son named Hur.

19When Azubah died, Caleb married Ephrath, and she bore him Hur.
וַתָּ֖מָת עֲזוּבָ֑ה וַיִּֽקַּֽח־ל֤וֹ כָלֵב֙ אֶת־אֶפְרָ֔ת וַתֵּ֥לֶד ל֖וֹ אֶת־חֽוּר׃ ‬

Ephrath is mentioned in connection with Hezron's lineage as an important matriarch in the tribe of Judah.

Ephrath as the matriarch of Hur

Hur, son of Ephrathah, was the father of Uri, who in turn was the father of Bezalel, the craftsman who built the tabernacle.

Descendants of Caleb and Ephrathah

The descendants of Ephrathah through Hur played important roles, including as founders of Bethlehem and other cities.

50These were the descendants of Caleb. The sons of Hur, the firstborn of Ephrathah: Shobal the father of Kiriath Jearim,
אֵ֤לֶּה הָיוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י כָלֵ֔ב בֶּן־ח֖וּר בְּכ֣וֹר אֶפְרָ֑תָה שׁוֹבָ֕ל אֲבִ֖י קִרְיַ֥ת יְעָרִֽים׃ ‬
51Salma the father of Bethlehem, and Hareph the father of Beth Gader.
שַׂלְמָא֙ אֲבִ֣י בֵֽית־לָ֔חֶם חָרֵ֖ף אֲבִ֥י בֵית־גָּדֵֽר׃ ‬
52Shobal the father of Kiriath Jearim had these sons: Haroeh, and half of the Manahathites.
וַיִּהְי֤וּ בָנִים֙ לְשׁוֹבָ֔ל אֲבִ֖י קִרְיַ֣ת יְעָרִ֑ים הָרֹאֶ֖ה חֲצִ֥י הַמְּנֻחֽוֹת׃ ‬

Connection to Bethlehem-Ephrathah

The name Ephrathah is closely linked to Bethlehem, the city later known as the City of David and the place where the Messiah was to be born.

4Penuel was the father of Gedor, and Ezer the father of Hushah. These were the sons of Hur, the firstborn of Ephrathah, the father of Bethlehem.
וּפְנוּאֵל֙ אֲבִ֣י גְדֹ֔ר וְעֵ֖זֶר אֲבִ֣י חוּשָׁ֑ה אֵ֤לֶּה בְנֵי־חוּר֙ בְּכ֣וֹר אֶפְרָ֔תָה אֲבִ֖י בֵּ֥ית לָֽחֶם׃ ‬
1But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too small to be counted among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient days.
וְאַתָּ֞ה בֵּֽית־לֶ֣חֶם אֶפְרָ֗תָה צָעִיר֙ לִֽהְיוֹת֙ בְּאַלְפֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה מִמְּךָ֙ לִ֣י יֵצֵ֔א לִֽהְי֥וֹת מוֹשֵׁ֖ל בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וּמוֹצָאֹתָ֥יו מִקֶּ֖דֶם מִימֵ֥י עוֹלָֽם׃ ‬
