Abram travels to Egypt due to famine
There was a famine in the land of Canaan, so Abram went down to Egypt to live there as a foreigner. This led him into contact with Pharaoh.
Abram asked Sarai to say she was his sister because he feared the Egyptians would kill him on account of her beauty. This lie caused Pharaoh to take an interest in her.
The officials of Egypt praised Sarai's beauty to Pharaoh, and she was brought into Pharaoh's house. For her sake, Pharaoh treated Abram well and gave him sheep, cattle, donkeys, male and female servants, and camels.
The Lord struck Pharaoh and his household with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife. This demonstrated God's direct intervention to protect the covenant promises.
Pharaoh summoned Abram and rebuked him for lying about Sarai being his sister. He asked why Abram had not told the truth, so that he might have taken her as a wife.
