Jairus' Daughter

The Raised Girl

Jairus' daughter was a twelve-year-old girl who died but was raised to life by Jesus. Her healing is one of the most dramatic miracles in the Gospels and demonstrates Jesus' power over death.

The Father Asks Jesus for Help

Jairus, a synagogue leader, came to Jesus and earnestly asked him to come and lay his hands on his dying daughter.

22One of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus he fell at his feet

⸀καὶ ἔρχεται εἷς τῶν ἀρχισυναγώγων, ὀνόματι Ἰάϊρος, καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὸν πίπτει πρὸς τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ

23and pleaded with him urgently: "My little daughter is dying. Please come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be healed and live."

καὶ ⸀παρακαλεῖ αὐτὸν πολλὰ λέγων ὅτι Τὸ θυγάτριόν μου ἐσχάτως ἔχει, ἵνα ἐλθὼν ἐπιθῇς ⸂τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῇ⸃ ⸀ἵνα σωθῇ καὶ ⸀ζήσῃ.

The Message of Her Death

While Jesus was on his way, some from Jairus' house arrived and said that his daughter had died and there was no longer any need to trouble the teacher.

35While he was still speaking, messengers came from the house of the synagogue leader and said, "Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?"

Ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἔρχονται ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀρχισυναγώγου λέγοντες ὅτι Ἡ θυγάτηρ σου ἀπέθανεν· τί ἔτι σκύλλεις τὸν διδάσκαλον;

Jesus Encourages Faith

Jesus overheard the message and said to Jairus: 'Do not be afraid; only believe!' He did not want the father to lose hope.

36But Jesus, overhearing what was said, told the synagogue leader, "Do not be afraid; only believe."

ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ⸀παρακούσας τὸν λόγον λαλούμενον λέγει τῷ ἀρχισυναγώγῳ· Μὴ φοβοῦ, μόνον πίστευε.

Jesus raises her

Jesus went into the girl's room, took her by the hand and said 'Talita kumi', which means 'Little girl, I say to you: Get up!' Immediately she stood up and began to walk around.

41Taking the child by the hand, he said to her, "Talitha koum!"—which means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!"

καὶ κρατήσας τῆς χειρὸς τοῦ παιδίου λέγει αὐτῇ· Ταλιθα ⸀κουμ, ὅ ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον· Τὸ κοράσιον, σοὶ λέγω, ⸀ἔγειρε.

42Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And they were utterly astonished.

καὶ ⸀εὐθὺς ἀνέστη τὸ κοράσιον καὶ περιεπάτει, ἦν γὰρ ἐτῶν δώδεκα. καὶ ἐξέστησαν ⸁εὐθὺς ἐκστάσει μεγάλῃ.

Jesus asks for food for her

After the girl had gotten up, Jesus instructed that they should give her something to eat, confirming that she was truly alive again.

43He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and he told them to give her something to eat.

καὶ διεστείλατο αὐτοῖς πολλὰ ἵνα μηδεὶς γνοῖ τοῦτο, καὶ εἶπεν δοθῆναι αὐτῇ φαγεῖν.
