John
The disciple whom Jesus loved
John was one of Jesus' three closest disciples, often called 'the disciple whom Jesus loved'. He witnessed the most important events in Jesus' life, stood by the cross, and took care of Mary. He wrote the Gospel of John, three letters, and Revelation.

The Call by the Sea
Jesus called John and his brother James while they were mending their nets with their father.
21Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. He called them,
Καὶ προβὰς ἐκεῖθεν εἶδεν ἄλλους δύο ἀδελφούς, Ἰάκωβον τὸν τοῦ Ζεβεδαίου καὶ Ἰωάννην τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ, ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ μετὰ Ζεβεδαίου τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτῶν καταρτίζοντας τὰ δίκτυα αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐκάλεσεν αὐτούς.
22and at once they left the boat and their father and followed him.
οἱ δὲ εὐθέως ἀφέντες τὸ πλοῖον καὶ τὸν πατέρα αὐτῶν ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ.
At the Last Supper table
John leaned against Jesus' chest during the last meal.
23Reclining next to Jesus was one of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved.
⸀ἦν ἀνακείμενος εἷς ⸀ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ κόλπῳ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ, ὃν ἠγάπα ὁ Ἰησοῦς·
24Simon Peter motioned to him to ask who it was he meant.
νεύει οὖν τούτῳ Σίμων Πέτρος ⸂πυθέσθαι τίς ἂν εἴη⸃ περὶ οὗ λέγει.
25So he leaned back against Jesus and asked him, "Lord, who is it?"
⸀ἀναπεσὼν ἐκεῖνος οὕτως ἐπὶ τὸ στῆθος τοῦ Ἰησοῦ λέγει αὐτῷ· Κύριε, τίς ἐστιν;
At the Cross
John was the only one of the twelve who stood at the cross when Jesus died.
25Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
Εἱστήκεισαν δὲ παρὰ τῷ σταυρῷ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἡ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἡ ἀδελφὴ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ, Μαρία ἡ τοῦ Κλωπᾶ καὶ Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνή.
26When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing there, he said to his mother, "Woman, here is your son."
Ἰησοῦς οὖν ἰδὼν τὴν μητέρα καὶ τὸν μαθητὴν παρεστῶτα ὃν ἠγάπα λέγει τῇ ⸀μητρί· Γύναι, ⸀ἴδε ὁ υἱός σου·
27Then he said to the disciple, "Here is your mother." And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
εἶτα λέγει τῷ μαθητῇ· ⸀Ἴδε ἡ μήτηρ σου. καὶ ἀπʼ ἐκείνης τῆς ὥρας ἔλαβεν ὁ μαθητὴς αὐτὴν εἰς τὰ ἴδια.
At the Empty Tomb
John ran to the tomb with Peter and saw and believed.
3So Peter and the other disciple set out for the tomb.
ἐξῆλθεν οὖν ὁ Πέτρος καὶ ὁ ἄλλος μαθητής, καὶ ἤρχοντο εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον.
4They were both running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
ἔτρεχον δὲ οἱ δύο ὁμοῦ· καὶ ὁ ἄλλος μαθητὴς προέδραμεν τάχιον τοῦ Πέτρου καὶ ἦλθεν πρῶτος εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον,
8Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in. He saw, and he believed.
τότε οὖν εἰσῆλθεν καὶ ὁ ἄλλος μαθητὴς ὁ ἐλθὼν πρῶτος εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον, καὶ εἶδεν καὶ ἐπίστευσεν·
After the Resurrection
John recognized Jesus by the Sea of Tiberias before the others.
7Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" As soon as Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he wrapped his outer garment around him, for he had stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea.
λέγει οὖν ὁ μαθητὴς ἐκεῖνος ὃν ἠγάπα ὁ Ἰησοῦς τῷ Πέτρῳ· Ὁ κύριός ἐστιν. Σίμων οὖν Πέτρος, ἀκούσας ὅτι ὁ κύριός ἐστιν, τὸν ἐπενδύτην διεζώσατο, ἦν γὰρ γυμνός, καὶ ἔβαλεν ἑαυτὸν εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν·
20Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them—the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and asked, "Lord, who is going to betray you?"
⸀Ἐπιστραφεὶς ὁ Πέτρος βλέπει τὸν μαθητὴν ὃν ἠγάπα ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀκολουθοῦντα, ὃς καὶ ἀνέπεσεν ἐν τῷ δείπνῳ ἐπὶ τὸ στῆθος αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν· Κύριε, τίς ἐστιν ὁ παραδιδούς σε;
21When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about him?"
τοῦτον ⸀οὖν ἰδὼν ὁ Πέτρος λέγει τῷ Ἰησοῦ· Κύριε, οὗτος δὲ τί;
22Jesus answered, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me."
λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ἐὰν αὐτὸν θέλω μένειν ἕως ἔρχομαι, τί πρὸς σέ; σύ ⸂μοι ἀκολούθει⸃.
23So the word spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus had not said that he would not die, but, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?"
ἐξῆλθεν οὖν ⸂οὗτος ὁ λόγος⸃ εἰς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ὅτι ὁ μαθητὴς ἐκεῖνος οὐκ ἀποθνῄσκει. ⸂οὐκ εἶπεν δὲ⸃ αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι οὐκ ἀποθνῄσκει ἀλλʼ· Ἐὰν αὐτὸν θέλω μένειν ἕως ἔρχομαι, τί πρὸς σέ;
24This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down, and we know that his testimony is true.
Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ μαθητὴς ὁ μαρτυρῶν περὶ τούτων καὶ ⸀ὁ γράψας ταῦτα, καὶ οἴδαμεν ὅτι ἀληθὴς ⸂αὐτοῦ ἡ μαρτυρία ἐστίν⸃.
The Visions on Patmos
John received Revelation while exiled on Patmos.
1The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John,
Ἀποκάλυψις Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ἣν ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ ὁ θεὸς δεῖξαι τοῖς δούλοις αὐτοῦ, ἃ δεῖ γενέσθαι ἐν τάχει, καὶ ἐσήμανεν ἀποστείλας διὰ τοῦ ἀγγέλου αὐτοῦ τῷ δούλῳ αὐτοῦ Ἰωάννῃ,
9I, John, your brother who shares with you in the suffering and the kingdom and the patient endurance in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.
Ἐγὼ Ἰωάννης, ὁ ἀδελφὸς ὑμῶν καὶ ⸀συγκοινωνὸς ἐν τῇ θλίψει καὶ βασιλείᾳ καὶ ὑπομονῇ ⸀ἐν Ἰησοῦ, ἐγενόμην ἐν τῇ νήσῳ τῇ καλουμένῃ Πάτμῳ διὰ τὸν λόγον τοῦ θεοῦ ⸀καὶ τὴν μαρτυρίαν ⸀Ἰησοῦ.
10On the Lord's day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet,
ἐγενόμην ἐν πνεύματι ἐν τῇ κυριακῇ ἡμέρᾳ, καὶ ἤκουσα ⸂ὀπίσω μου φωνὴν⸃ μεγάλην ὡς σάλπιγγος
11saying, "Write in a book what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea."
λεγούσης· Ὃ βλέπεις γράψον εἰς βιβλίον καὶ πέμψον ταῖς ἑπτὰ ἐκκλησίαις, εἰς Ἔφεσον καὶ εἰς Σμύρναν καὶ εἰς Πέργαμον καὶ εἰς Θυάτειρα καὶ εἰς Σάρδεις καὶ εἰς Φιλαδέλφειαν καὶ εἰς Λαοδίκειαν.
17When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me and said: "Do not be afraid. I am the first and the last,
Καὶ ὅτε εἶδον αὐτόν, ἔπεσα πρὸς τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ ὡς νεκρός· καὶ ἔθηκεν τὴν δεξιὰν αὐτοῦ ἐπʼ ἐμὲ λέγων· Μὴ φοβοῦ· ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ πρῶτος καὶ ὁ ἔσχατος,
19So write what you have seen, what is now, and what is to happen after this.
γράψον οὖν ἃ εἶδες καὶ ἃ εἰσὶν καὶ ἃ μέλλει ⸀γίνεσθαι μετὰ ταῦτα.
