The Woman Caught in Adultery

The scribes and Pharisees brought the woman to Jesus in the temple after she had been caught in adultery, presenting her publicly before the crowd.

2At dawn he came again to the temple, and all the people came to him. He sat down and began to teach them.

3Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand in front of everyone

ἄγουσιν δὲ οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι πρὸς αὐτὸν γυναῖκα ἐν μοιχείᾳ καταλήφθεισαν· καὶ στήσαντες αὐτὴν ἐν μέσῳ,

4and said to him, to test him, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of adultery.

λέγουσιν αὐτῷ, πειράζοντες· Διδάσκαλε, αὕτη ἡ γυνὴ κατελήφθη ἐπʼ αὐτοφόρῳ μοιχευομένη.

The Trap Set for Jesus

The accusers referred to the Law of Moses, which required stoning, and asked Jesus what he thought in order to test him.

5In the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?"

ἐν δὲ τῷ νόμῳ Μωσῆς ἡμῖν ἐνετείλατο τὰς τοιαύτας λιθοβολεῖσθαι· σὺ οὖν τί λέγεις;

6They said this to trap him, so that they would have grounds to accuse him. But Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger in the dirt, paying them no attention.

τοῦτο δὲ ἔλεγον πειράζοντες αὐτόν, ἵνα ἔχωσιν κατηγορεῖν αὐτοῦ. ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς κάτω κύψας, τῷ δακτύλῳ ἔγραφεν εἰς τὴν γῆν, μὴ προσποιούμενος.

Jesus Writes on the Ground

Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground instead of answering the accusers' question immediately.

6They said this to trap him, so that they would have grounds to accuse him. But Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger in the dirt, paying them no attention.

8And again he bent down and wrote in the dirt.

καὶ πάλιν κάτω κύψας ἔγραφεν εἰς τὴν γῆν.

He Who Is Without Sin

Jesus stood up and spoke these famous words: 'Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.' All the accusers left one by one.

7When they kept pressing him, he straightened up and said to them, "Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her."

ὡς δὲ ἐπέμενον ἐρωτῶντες αὐτόν, ἀνακύψας εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· Ὁ ἀναμάρτητος ὑμῶν, πρῶτον ἐπʼ αὐτὴν τὸν λίθον βαλέτω.

9When they heard this, convicted by their own conscience, they went away one by one, beginning with the oldest. Jesus was left alone, with the woman still standing there.

οἱ δέ, ἀκούσαντες, καὶ ὑπὸ τῆς συνειδήσεως ἐλεγχόμενοι, ἐξήρχοντο εἷς καθʼ εἷς, ἀρξάμενοι ἀπὸ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων· καὶ κατελείφθη μόνος ὁ Ἰησοῦς, καὶ ἡ γυνὴ ἐν μέσῳ οὖσα.

Jesus Refuses to Condemn

When all the accusers had gone, Jesus told the woman that he did not condemn her either, and instructed her to go and sin no more.

10Jesus straightened up, and seeing no one but the woman, he said to her, "Where are they, those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?"

ἀνακύψας δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, καὶ μηδένα θεασάμενος πλὴν τὴς γυναικός, εἶπεν αὐτῇ· Ποῦ εἰσιν ἐκεῖνοι οἱ κατήγοροί σου; Οὐδείς σε κατέκρινεν;

11"No one, sir," she said. Then Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go, and sin no more."

ἡ δὲ εἶπεν· Οὐδείς, κύριε. εἶπεν δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Οὐδὲ ἐγώ σε κρίνω· πορεύου καὶ μηκέτι ἁμάρτανε.⟧
