The Giant King from Bashan

Og was king of Bashan and the last survivor of the Rephaim, a people of giants. He was defeated by the Israelites under Moses' leadership, and his kingdom was given to half the tribe of Manasseh. He is known for his enormous iron bed, which was nine cubits long.

Og went out with all his army to meet the Israelites in battle at Edrei, but the Lord gave him into Israel's hand.
33Then they turned and went up along the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan came out with his whole army to meet them in battle at Edrei.
וַיִּפְנוּ֙ וַֽיַּעֲל֔וּ דֶּ֖רֶךְ הַבָּשָׁ֑ן וַיֵּצֵ֣א עוֹג֩ מֶֽלֶךְ־הַבָּשָׁ֨ן לִקְרָאתָ֜ם ה֧וּא וְכָל־עַמּ֛וֹ לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה אֶדְרֶֽעִי׃
34The LORD said to Moses, "Do not be afraid of him, for I have given him into your hand, along with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon."
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֤ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה֙ אַל־תִּירָ֣א אֹת֔וֹ כִּ֣י בְיָדְךָ֞ נָתַ֧תִּי אֹת֛וֹ וְאֶת־כָּל־עַמּ֖וֹ וְאֶת־אַרְצ֑וֹ וְעָשִׂ֣יתָ לּ֔וֹ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשִׂ֗יתָ לְסִיחֹן֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ הָֽאֱמֹרִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר יוֹשֵׁ֖ב בְּחֶשְׁבּֽוֹן׃
35So they struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army, leaving him no survivor, and they took possession of his land.
וַיַּכּ֨וּ אֹת֤וֹ וְאֶת־בָּנָיו֙ וְאֶת־כָּל־עַמּ֔וֹ עַד־בִּלְתִּ֥י הִשְׁאִֽיר־ל֖וֹ שָׂרִ֑יד וַיִּֽירְשׁ֖וּ אֶת־אַרְצֽוֹ׃
God's promise of victory
The Lord told Moses not to fear Og, for God would give him and all his people and land into the hands of the Israelites.
1Then we turned and went up the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan came out against us with all his people to fight at Edrei.
וַנֵּ֣פֶן וַנַּ֔עַל דֶּ֖רֶךְ הַבָּשָׁ֑ן וַיֵּצֵ֣א עוֹג֩ מֶֽלֶךְ־הַבָּשָׁ֨ן לִקְרָאתֵ֜נוּ ה֧וּא וְכָל־עַמּ֛וֹ לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה אֶדְרֶֽעִי׃
2But the LORD said to me, "Do not fear him, for I have given him into your hand, along with all his people and his land. Do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon."

3So the LORD our God also gave Og king of Bashan and all his people into our hand, and we struck them down until not a single survivor was left.
וַיִּתֵּן֩ יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֵ֜ינוּ בְּיָדֵ֗נוּ גַּ֛ם אֶת־ע֥וֹג מֶֽלֶךְ־הַבָּשָׁ֖ן וְאֶת־כָּל־עַמּ֑וֹ וַנַּכֵּ֕הוּ עַד־בִּלְתִּ֥י הִשְׁאִֽיר־ל֖וֹ שָׂרִֽיד׃
Og's kingdom conquered
Israel captured sixty cities in Og's kingdom, all fortified cities with high walls, gates, and bars, as well as many unwalled villages.
4At that time we captured all his cities; there was not a town we did not take from them—sixty cities, the whole region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
וַנִּלְכֹּ֤ד אֶת־כָּל־עָרָיו֙ בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֔וא לֹ֤א הָֽיְתָה֙ קִרְיָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־לָקַ֖חְנוּ מֵֽאִתָּ֑ם שִׁשִּׁ֥ים עִיר֙ כָּל־חֶ֣בֶל אַרְגֹּ֔ב מַמְלֶ֥כֶת ע֖וֹג בַּבָּשָֽׁן׃
5All of these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides a great many unwalled villages.
כָּל־אֵ֜לֶּה עָרִ֧ים בְּצֻר֛וֹת חוֹמָ֥ה גְבֹהָ֖ה דְּלָתַ֣יִם וּבְרִ֑יחַ לְבַ֛ד מֵעָרֵ֥י הַפְּרָזִ֖י הַרְבֵּ֥ה מְאֹֽד׃
6We devoted them to destruction, as we had done to Sihon king of Heshbon, destroying every city—men, women, and children.
וַנַּחֲרֵ֣ם אוֹתָ֔ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשִׂ֔ינוּ לְסִיחֹ֖ן מֶ֣לֶךְ חֶשְׁבּ֑וֹן הַחֲרֵם֙ כָּל־עִ֣יר מְתִ֔ם הַנָּשִׁ֖ים וְהַטָּֽף׃
7But all the livestock and the spoil of the cities we took as plunder for ourselves.
וְכָל־הַבְּהֵמָ֛ה וּשְׁלַ֥ל הֶעָרִ֖ים בַּזּ֥וֹנוּ לָֽנוּ׃
The last of the Rephaim
And he is described as the last surviving Rephaim. His iron bed was nine cubits long and four cubits wide, and it was preserved in Rabbah among the Ammonites.
11For only Og king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the Rephaim. His bed was a bed of iron; it is still in Rabbah of the Ammonites, nine cubits long and four cubits wide, by the common cubit.
כִּ֣י רַק־ע֞וֹג מֶ֣לֶךְ הַבָּשָׁ֗ן נִשְׁאַר֮ מִיֶּ֣תֶר הָרְפָאִים֒ הִנֵּ֤ה עַרְשׂוֹ֙ עֶ֣רֶשׂ בַּרְזֶ֔ל הֲלֹ֣ה הִ֔וא בְּרַבַּ֖ת בְּנֵ֣י עַמּ֑וֹן תֵּ֧שַׁע אַמּ֣וֹת אָרְכָּ֗הּ וְאַרְבַּ֥ע אַמּ֛וֹת רָחְבָּ֖הּ בְּאַמַּת־אִֽישׁ׃
The Land Is Allotted to Manasseh
After the victory, Og's kingdom in Bashan was given to half of the tribe of Manasseh as their inheritance.
13The rest of Gilead and all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh—the whole region of Argob, all of Bashan. It used to be called the land of the Rephaim.
וְיֶ֨תֶר הַגִּלְעָ֤ד וְכָל־הַבָּשָׁן֙ מַמְלֶ֣כֶת ע֔וֹג נָתַ֕תִּי לַחֲצִ֖י שֵׁ֣בֶט הַֽמְנַשֶּׁ֑ה כֹּ֣ל חֶ֤בֶל הָֽאַרְגֹּב֙ לְכָל־הַבָּשָׁ֔ן הַה֥וּא יִקָּרֵ֖א אֶ֥רֶץ רְפָאִֽים׃
Remembrance of the Victory
The victory over Og is mentioned repeatedly in the Bible as an example of God's mighty deeds for Israel.
20And Og, king of Bashan; his steadfast love endures forever.
וּ֭לְעוֹג מֶ֣לֶךְ הַבָּשָׁ֑ן כִּ֖י לְעוֹלָ֣ם חַסְדּֽוֹ׃
